As a huge Durannie, you can imagine how excited I was when I found out that the Fab 5 Duran Duran were reissuing their classic album “Rio,” as a deluxe 2-cd limited edition.  It comes in a jewel-cased size hard back book that has a 50 page booklet filled with rare photos, full lyrics and a nice essay about the album.

If that’s not a draw for you, the cds contain the original UK album version (remastered), 5 tracks that were remixed for the US album version [more on that in a second], 4 b-sides from the original singles, 5 extended versions and mixes and the jewels of the set: 4 never before released demos.

When the album was released in November of 1982, they decided to remix 5 of the key tracks for the US market.  Those versions have never been available on cd until now.  If you are still nonplussed, I’ll compare the track times and maybe that’ll bring you over to my side.

The demos are of Last Chance on the Stairway, My Own Way (with many different lyrics than the album version), New Religion and Like An Angel.  The demos are interesting to hear as they show the beginnings of some of the band’s best loved songs.  The B-Sides and remixes are already available on CD as part of Duran Duran’s amazing singles box set, but it’s still nice to have all the tracks from this era in one place.

Let’s not forget that the album Rio features seminal tracks from the band such as “Hungry Like The Wolf,” “Save A Prayer,” “Rio,” “My Own Way,” and fan favorites “New Religion,” “Last Chance on the Stairway,” “The Chauffeur,” and “Lonely In Your Nightmare.”  Due to the pretty boy image of the band, it was hard to see then that this album would not only stand the test of time, but be regarded as one of the best albums of the 1980s and one of the finest moments for the New Romantic Era.

If you are a fan of Duran Duran, this set is a must have.  Also more good news for fans, rumours abound that in the first half of 2010, their self-titled first album, Seven and the Ragged Tiger and Notorious will be getting the same deluxe treatment!

Interesting. I can see this as a gift for the BF. I hope the others come out. That would be fantastic esp if they get to Big Thing. Is this the start of the remasters?

I still get excited every time “Hungry Like the Wolf” comes on my iPod. Such beautiful Grade 6 memories.
