When you hang out with the Goddess of Everything Cool, you can always expect to have a fun night.  This was again the case as we went to the New York premiere of “The Girl Who Played With Fire,” directed fabulously by Daniel Alfredson.

“The Girl Who Played with Fire” is the sequel to the international smash “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.”  It’s hard to talk too much about the film without giving away the plot, but let me say this:  It was much more suspenseful than the first film and it’s pretty gritty.  As with the first movie, you’ll see torture, muff diving, family drama, a guy getting axed and lots of other surprises that will leave you on the edge of your seat.  Plus the movie (as well as the book), ends on a cliff hanger, so I am super excited for the release of the 3rd installment.  If you are looking for a book/film series to obsess over, toss aside the shittly written/acted Twilight series and head straight for these books and films!  They are awesome.

After the film, director Daniel Alfredson talked a little bit about the drama behind the stories.  He directed both the second and third film installments (“Played With Fire” is out in the US in July 2010 and “The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest” is out in the US in October 2010.  Both films are out in Europe).  The films are based on Stieg Larsson’s novels and after the 3rd book was released, Larsson died.  As rumor has it, he left no will, so his estate went to his family and the woman he’d been living with got nothing.  But she has the manuscripts to a finished 4th novel and most of a 5th novel that Larsson was working on before he died.  It’ll be really interesting to see how this plays out.  Will the world ever find out what happens to Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist?  The behind the scenes drama is almost as good as the on the screen drama.

Thanks to Daniel Alfredson for being cool and sharing a moment with me.  “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” (the first film), is now playing in selected theaters.
