Martina Topley-Bird

On May 11, 2010, prior to singing with Massive Attack at Terminal 5 in New York, Martina Topley-Bird opened the show with a 35 minute solo set.  Martina Topley-Bird is best known in the United States from her work with Tricky and for those that don’t know her songs, her voice is as smooth as Erykah Badu mixed with the tribal beats of Morcheeba’s Skye Edwards.  She normally performs with a full band, but tonight she took the stage by herself and instead of other musicians, she sampled herself while singing live to create a soundscape of smoothness.  Her latest album, 2008’s “The Blue God,” has not seen a release in the US yet, but she told the sold-out crowd that it has been re-recorded and will be released on Blur and Gorillaz front-man Damon Albarn’s label in July 2010.  If her performance is any indication of what her album will sound like, it’s going to be great!

The lady Bird was pearched up on the 2nd balcony in between sets where I was seated for the show. Seeing her up close was quite breathtaking. She is even more radiant than one might expect her to be. The glitter and doom apperence is simply ‘billie hollididay-ish’.
Her fragility ever so charming and sweet. He voice is as delicate as a south American yellow bellied mandrake with larangitus. Really she is very sweet, and was purr-fuk as an opening act. I am going to begin to scour the planet now for her 2008 the blud gods. Hope u we’re all se to catch that little ditty with her and the small electric guitar. I will be posting some great pix of this and lots more at my site in next few weeks. Please make a note to check back for this show and some others shot in the past year in around the city, and elsewhere. It was an amazing show, one of the years highlights to date. Peter Gabriela show was as incredible just 10 days before ar RCMH. Pix also coming for that as well.

She’s got a quasi-new album coming out this summer (on Damon Albarn’s label)… maybe it’ll be on that?

My review GET IT!!! Amazing piece of work. Looking forward hearing seeing ‘bird’ now as much as massive attack. They are simply an amazing force of music genius alone or togeter! Catch either of them whenever possible, one of the best shows this year. Pix of the sultry Bird coming soon…. She is a talent few can compare too. Ma fortunate to have her doing Psyche Bable with them. Was a masterpiece.
