On June 7, 2010, Glasgow’s finest, Camera Obscura played a sold out show at Manhattan’s Grand Ballroom.  The venue is located on the 7th floor of the same building as the massive Hammerstein Ballroom and the Grand Ballroom is only a slightly smaller space.  I’ve been to the Hammerstein dozens of times and never realized this performance space existed. A venue within a venue, what a concept!  Before I get on with my review of the show, let’s have a brief lesson in Latin.  “Camera Obscura” means “dark/vaulted chamber room,” and is an optical device that projects images of its surroundings on a screen.  Oddly, this type of device was not used in concert tonight. For those that don’t know Camera Obscura’s music, they are an indie pop band that is pretty mellow and sound-wise could roughly be compared with Belle and Sebastian.  The band is touring in support of their latest album “My Maudlin Career,” which was released in April 2009.  Yesterday, they played a free show in Brooklyn and lead singer Tracyanne Campbell announced that she recognized a bunch of people in the front row from yesterday’s show. She went on to say that she felt really bad that she refused to take a picture with the lady (Lindsey) that was standing next to me.  You know I couldn’t resist shouting out, “why don’t you take one now?”  Tracyanne put her guitar down and obliged, and of course, I took it with my hand!  How cool is that?! You can see a photo of that moment after the jump.  Camera Obscura also treated us to playing with a string section so that we could hear the songs “performed properly.”  They performed tracks such as “French Navy,” “Keep It Clean,” “James,” and fan favorite “80’s Fan.”  Speaking of fans, the people I met in the front row were all really cool and as the set list was tucked under a speaker, I wasn’t able to get a clear shot of it, but luckily for all of us, Derek, who was standing a few people over from me, took detailed notes.  Thanks Derek!  I think it’s safe to say that a good time was had by all tonight.
