I debated whether or not to even write a review of my experience seeing Das Racists, but with my luck, they’ll become the next biggest thing so I might as well get my two cents in. June 14, 2010 at the Music Hall of Williamsburg began on a great note as the first band Sensual Harassment was totally awesome! Das Racists were up next and whoever booked this terrible band in the mix of a night of pop electronica deserves to be fired immediately! These rappers were clearly drunk and the trio, whenever possible, all three of them spoke at the same time making it a cacophony of irritating noises. And that was just the between song banter! They all hopped around on the stage like possessed whirling dervishes and it was a dizzying site. When the audience is secretly hoping the band members will fall and hurt themselves so the show will end is always a bad sign! At one point, since I was standing in the front row, I had the displeasure of having one of the rappers get right in my face to “sing to me.” Well, since he was rapping really fast and he had been drinking, spit flew out of his mouth and hit me in the face! Of course, I was totally upset and grossed out and I shouted at him “Are you fucking kidding me?!” He quickly retreated and got me a towel, but by that point, this band could not do right by me. Luckily for the crowd, Penguin Prison came on next and saved the day with an awesome set, and of course the main act Delphic was also very great. If you find out that Das Racists will be the opening act for a show you are planning on attending, my suggestion is GET THERE LATE!
