Gil Scott-Heron is a poet, author and musician, and the legend showed off all of those skills at a free concert at Summerstage in New York’s Central Park on June 27, 2010. He was jailed a few years ago for drug possession and his release from prison sparked his first album in 16 years called “I’m New Here.” He made several references to his arrest and two of my favorite stories he told were these: “You probably made bets with your friends as to whether I’d show up on time. Well, you lost!” “It’s weird having people that don’t know you write reviews of your music. People have written that being out of jail made me make an unhappy record. Obviously, they’ve never been in jail. When you are in jail, you are unhappy. When you are released, you are happy to be out of the motherfucker.” By the way, Gil Scott-Heron showed up on time and he was wearing his finest Gil Scott-Heron T-Shirt. He told stories in between songs and would do spoken word bits in between verses and it was really awesome. It was definitely worth being in the direct sunlight on a 91 degree day.
