It’s hard to believe that British rockers Oasis have been around for 15 years! In that time, they chalked up 23 UK Top Ten singles and 8 Number One’s. Their on-stage and off-stage antics, bickering and the brothers Gallagher’s infamous brawls have sometimes overshadowed the great music they created, but luckily Big Brother / Columbia are reminding the world why we all fell in love with Oasis in the first place. “Time Flies… 1994 – 2009 The Complete Singles Collection” compiles all 26 single A-sides the band released and it’s great! Favorites such as “Wonderwall,” “Live Forever,” “Champagne Supernova,” “Don’t Look Back In Anger,” and “D’you Know What I Mean” sound as fresh as ever and are finally housed in a definitive career-spanning collection. The booklet contains quotes from either Liam or Noel Gallagher discussing the songs alongside fan commentaries from all over the world and it’s a very interesting read, where you will either find out some back story on the makings of these great songs or you will experience why these songs have meant so much to their fans. My favorite quote has to be from “Wonderwall,” where fan Jeff Thompson (from Atlanta, USA) says “If the soul could speak, ‘Wonderwall’ is what it would sing.”
As Columbia’s Legacy Division seems to do with every release, they once again up the ante for must have reissues. The “Time Flies…” collection comes in three different package options: (1) The standard 2-cd version featuring 27 songs (including the first inclusion of the song “Whatever” on an Oasis album); (2) A deluxe limited edition box set featuring the double-cd, a DVD containing all 38 of Oasis’ videos (including the US and UK versions for “Supersonic” and “Live Forever”); track by track video commentary by Noel and Liam Gallagher (presumably conducted in separate rooms); plus a CD of their last recorded live show in London from 2009; (3) A deluxe limited edition box set on vinyl of all 27 tracks (spread across 10 LP sides). The CD tracklist can be seen here.
I think these packages will please Oasis fans old and new and hopefully one day, the brothers Gallagher will let the dust settle on their estranged relationship, and reunite to give the world more life defining music. But until then, we’ll always have “Time Flies…” to transport ourselves into an oasis of sonic bliss.
“Time Flies… 1994 – 2009” is available (in all formats) on June 15, 2010. Get it!
