Richard Butler of the Psychedelic Furs

On June 4, 2010, The Psychedelic Furs rocked the socks off of New York at Irving Plaza.  It’s hard to believe that the band has been around since 1977, because they looked and sounded as fresh as ever.  Front-man Richard Butler jumped around on the stage throughout the entire 90 minute set and his unmistakable voice was as perfect as it is on record.  The Furs took the stage at 10:30 PM and played until midnight.  Opening with “Love My Way,” the show just seemed to get better by the song.  Though he didn’t say much in between songs, Richard Butler let the music do all the talking and talk, talk, talk it did!  Saxophone player Mars Williams played a few solos that were absolutely incredible.  In fact, you can see one of the solos on a video I took of “All This And Nothing,” which will be forthcoming – stay tuned!  The band ran through hits such as “Pretty In Pink,” “Heaven,” “Sister Europe,” as well as their cover of Roxy Music’s “Pyjamarama.”  While they didn’t play “Heartbreak Beat” or “India,” the sold-out crowd definitely got their money’s worth.  What a night!

[…] I find it funny that the one song I chose to record for blog posterity encapsulates all the best parts of the Psychedelic Furs show at Irving Plaza on June 4, 2010 in New York. You’ll see a wonderful sax solo from Mars Williams and most importantly, you’ll hear Richard Butler’s amazing vocals. As the video opens, Richard Butler is jumping up and down as he did quite often through the show. Could there be anything more precious? I think not. As I previously mentioned, the Psychedelic Furs rocked! […]
