Irrelevant now at the Arario Gallery in NYC through August 6, 2010
The Arario Gallery in New York is currently showing a very interesting exhibition whose full title is “Irrelevant: Local Emerging Asian Artists Who Don’t Make Work About Being Asian.” There are over 40 artists in this mixed media exhibit and the works range from the traditional to the bizarre. As I toured the gallery, it never occurred to me once that all of the artists participating in the exhibit are of Asian descent, but as a lover of cultural beauty, it wouldn’t have mattered to me anyway. I recommend this exhibit both for the works included as well as the gallery space – it’s amazing. The Arario Gallery is located at 521 West 25th Street in New York and “Irrelevant” runs through August 6, 2010.

There’s rumours that Lady Gaga and Robyn will perform together on “The Gays Think We’re Jesus Tour,” but until that day comes, here’s a video of Robyn performing “Dancing on my Own” at a very exclusive concert in New York on July 29, 2010. Thanks again to Sheena Beaston for the hookup!
On July 29, 2010, Ohio’s The National played a sold out show at Terminal 5 in New York to celebrate Spin Magazine’s 25th anniversary. The National hit the stage around 10:30 after Kurt Vile and Suckers (more on both bands coming soon). The band has been around since 2001 and this was my first time seeing them live. The post-punk/indie band played both of their Barack Obama inspired songs “Mr. November” and “Fake Empire” as well as my favorite “Anyone’s Ghost.” A video of that song will be forthcoming, so stay tuned. I am merely one person with tons of experiences to write about! Lead singer Matt Berninger has a fun stage disposition where he is pretty subtle about getting into it, but when he finally lets loose, it’s hard not to watch with a smile. The audience loved every minute of the show, not only for the music and the crowd sing-a-longs, but perhaps because we were treated to seeing them perform at a much smaller venue than the last time they were in town, performing at Radio City Music Hall. The National also played a generous portion of their latest record “High Violet,” and judging by the clouds of marijuana smoke that were all around the venue, I think that pretty much sums up the night.

Swedish singer Robyn is on top of the world right now. After scoring a worldwide smash with “Show Me Love,” in the 1990s, she faded out of the spotlight for almost 10 years and has begun her world domination again. Putting out an ambitious 3 albums this year, Robyn did a very special and very exclusive performance at the P.C Richard and Son Theater in New York on July 29, 2010, and thanks to winning a contest on one of my favorite sites, Sheena Beaston, I was there in the front row to catch all the excitement! Thanks Sheena B, you know I love you!!
Robyn did a 7 song set, that featured her new single “Dancing On My Own.” A video will be coming soon, but bear with me, I am only one person with tons of experiences! She also performed her signature song “Show Me Love” as well as “Hang With Me,” and “With Every Heartbeat.” I am seeing Robyn again next week along with Dan Black and Kelis and after tonight’s performance, I already know I am going to have a great time!

July 29, 2010 was a crazy day. As the day began, I was already planning on seeing 3 bands. I was notified in the morning that a contest I’d entered won me free tickets to another band, of course – at the same time as my previous plans and on opposite sides of town. Being the lover of music that I am, I decided to go to see all of these bands (and I made it to all events – because I am that badass! Just look at any of these 1200+ posts in the archives of this site if you don’t believe me).
As I was on my way to the first event of the night, my horrible sense of direction finally paid off. I walked in the complete opposite direction of where I needed to go and then suddenly I saw The One. Neo. Keanu Reeves! The man who has starred in one of my favorite movies of all time, The Matrix, was just standing by himself having a smoke. Whoa! He was extremely nice he even thanked me for asking for a photo! Thanks so much Mr. Reeves. When I was standing an inch from him, it completely slipped my mind to tell him that The Matrix trilogy rules so much that I’ve never thought the same way about reality since.
