The Flaming Lips

I’ve always heard that Oklahoma psychedelic rockers The Flaming Lips are great in concert, and on July 27, 2010 at Terminal 5 in New York, it was my first experience seeing them live.  Nobody told me the show would be life changing!  I am not sure I can even begin to describe how awesome their show was, but I’ll try.  As the finishing touches to the stage were being made, I could already tell we were in for a treat because the backdrop reminded me of a Pink Floyd-esque wall of lights.  Lead singer Wayne Coyne emerged inside a life size see through beach ball a’la Peter Gabriel’s “Growing Up” tour and he performed the first song on top of the audience!

As soon as he got back on stage and exited from the life sized ball, confetti and balloons came down from the ceiling on a scale I’ve never seen in my entire run of going to concerts.  A lot of times during the encore of a show, you’ll see a bit of confetti, but there was so much coming from everywhere, you could hardly see in front of you.  I took a video of this, which will be coming soon (the sound is terrible, but the picture is what matters!)  Perhaps it was all designed as part of the trip because I was literally in a trance for the next 2 hours!

Please note this and the above two pictures took place in the first ten minutes of the concert!

It seemed that with each song, I fell deeper and deeper into a trance but the deeper I went, the bigger the smile on my face.  Lead singer Wayne Coyne spoke in between songs and his messages of love and peace were awe inspiring. At times, with all the theatrical chaos happening on the stage, I thought – when the world ends, the Flaming Lips should perform as the world goes out with a bang!

Did I forget to mention that a person dressed up as a bear got on stage and Wayne Coyne sang on top of the bear?!

Wanye Coyne was so grateful for all the love in the room and even performed the funeral march “Pompeii am Gotterdammerung” as he said the band would do each and every night until the Iraq war is over.  He asked us all to make peace signs and raise them up so high that perhaps our collective energy could send a ripple in the cosmos and help stop the fighting!  We need more people on this earth that have that kind of positive charisma.

The show was part of Spin Magazine’s 25th anniversary so tonight’s show was being streamed live on the interweb.  I am not sure if the show will be archived for future viewing, or perhaps a DVD release (crossing my fingers), but if you ever get the chance to see The Flaming Lips live, I command you to do so!  I’ve seen close to 100 bands this year and this show is going at the top of the list.  Will you be seeing more photos of the Flaming Lips in the near future on this site?  You can bet your sweet ass you will!

The setlist was:

The Fear / Worm Mountain / Silver Trembling Hands / She Don’t Use Jelly / The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song / The Sparrow Looks Up At The Machine / In the Morning of the Magicians / I Can Be A Frog / Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Pt. 1 / See The Leaves / Pompeii am Gotterdammerung / Taps / The Wand

Encore: Do You Realize??
