On September 18, 2010 when singer Jamie Lidell walked out on stage at New York’s Webster Hall, he was treated not only to an energetic crowd awaiting his arrival, but the audience sang the first song. It was Jamie Lidell’s birthday and the audience serenaded him with “Happy Birthday” as the band backed us up musically. He was even given a piece of cake and got to blow out a candle! It was a really cool concert moment, and as a fellow Virgo who celebrates my special day in about 24 hours from now, I wish Mr. Lidell many happy returns.
Jamie Lidell has been around since 1997, and somehow, I’ve managed to never hear any of his music until seeing him perform it live. When I read descriptions of his music that said “he’s soulful and funky,” that was enough for me to go see him. Soulful and funky are a great way to describe Lidell, whose voice to me sounds a bit like Dan Black meets Stevie Wonder meets Adam Levine (from Maroon 5). Your ears won’t argue with those comparisons! He also performed a medley of his older tracks in which he beat-boxed and then sampled himself to provide the rhythm. It was pretty cool.
