The alternate headline for this article was going to be:  There were a lot of straight people at the Gayngs concert.  On October 3, 2010, Minneapolis based supergroup Gayngs played New York’s Bowery Ballroom. The band has a whopping 23 members, but I believe I saw somewhere between 11 and 13 members on stage at once.  “Gayngs” is pronounced like “gangs” for those who are wondering.  Their music is indie rock, a bit on the mellow side, but it definitely had some funk and soul. I appreciated that most members of the group were either wearing sunglasses on stage, or had really cool hoods for the duration of the show, adding to the laid back vibe.  Four members of the band traded off on lead vocal duties including Justin Vernon from Bon Iver, whom I met before the show (and he was really cool).  Though I enjoyed the entire show, which consisted primarily of tracks from their album “Relayted,” my favorite two songs played were covers.  One was “Cry” by Godley and Creme, a track that I never thought I’d ever hear live and the other was “By Your Side” by Sade!  Luckily for you, my dear readers, I took videos of both songs, so please stay tuned to see them.  Another great thing about the band is the ‘Gayng Sign.’  All you have to do is flip up your middle finger on both hands, turn them to the side and have both hands connect at the middle finger. (Think of the ET poster having the two fingers touch, but with a way cooler twist).  The band encouraged us throwing up ‘Gayng Signs’ all night and I have to say, I think I am going to take what I’ve learned tonight and use it out in the real world.  I encourage you to do the same.  Thanks for a great night Gayngs!
