Joe Sumner of Fiction Plane

I have been excited to see Fiction Plane in concert since I read a glowing review of their show on The Worley Gig in 2009.  I am happy to report, they deserved all the praise. Fiction Plane played Mercury Lounge in New York on November 15, 2010. The Globes opened the show with a rockin’ set and Fiction Plane hit the stage at 8 pm.  Their music is indie rock that definitely has a bit of punk and surf influences.  We might as well get it out of the way now that the lead singer of Fiction Plane Joe Sumner is the son of Sting.  It’s been awhile since I’ve seen Sting in person, but I think that Joe must be much taller than his dad.  Their voices sound nothing alike, but you can definitely tell they are related.  At times during the show, the visual resemblance was mind blowing.

The musicianship of Fiction Plane was awesome and aside from one love song, every song played tonight was fast. As I looked around the venue, you could see everyone was having a great time.  “It’s A Lie” and “Two Sisters” were obvious crowd favorites and my favorite was the final song of the night “You Know You’re Good (The La La La Song).”  During that song, there was a crowd sing-along, most everyone was dancing and Joe Sumner was bouncing all over the stage.  Joe mentioned that it had been a long time since they played New York but after warm receptions like they received tonight, they definitely want to come back more often. Fiction Plane – you are welcome any time!  A video of “Out of My Face” is coming soon, so stay tuned for that.
