Coming from someone that is fortunate enough to see hundreds of bands a year, I can honestly say there are a select few who really put on a great show time after time. New York’s Penguin Prison is one of those bands. Their sold out show at Manhattan’s Tammany Hall on February 3, 2011 was the fourth time I’ve seen Penguin Prison perform and I had a great time! Their songs are all catchy as they seamlessly blend pop, soul, funk and dance music. Lead singer Chris Glover has a voice that is like “Off The Wall” era Michael Jackson meets Justin Timberlake. In addition to sounding amazing and being totally engaging with the crowd, he often plays the electric guitar upside down!
The hour long set included the band’s new single “Golden Train” as well as another sure fire hit, “Don’t Fuck With My Money.” It was great to see the audience singing along to tracks such as “A Funny Thing” and “The Worse It Gets” and people were dancing all night long. I think Penguin Prison is going to have a long and successful career ahead of them, as evidenced by the fact that they’ve already done remixes for the likes of Kylie Minogue, Goldfrapp and Jamiroquai. Their debut album will be out later this year, and I cannot wait to get it! Thanks to Penguin Prison for another great show!
The setlist was:
Something I’m Not / The Worse It Gets / Golden Train / Animal Animal / A Funny Thing / In The Way / Don’t Fuck With My Money / Multi-Millionaire
