New York! You have two final chances to see Danish pop sensation Oh Land perform tracks from her self titled debut album in an art gallery. At the Charles Bank Gallery, Oh Land and artist Eske Kath have teamed up for a live installation entitled “Welcome to Oh Land.” Eske Kath designed the cover art for the album and the singer is performing a 4 night residency at the gallery in front of the art. Backed with a string section, Oh Land is performing “picnic versions” of tracks from her album and it was a very fun experience. Thanks to A Heart is A Spade for guest list action. The Charles Bank Gallery is located at 196 Bowery in Manhattan. Remaining performances are on March 31 and April 1, 2011 at 8:30 PM. My suggestion is to get there early because the entry line tends to wrap around the block. If you can’t make it, it’s a pity, but here’s a sample of what you’re missing out on. Below, see the “picnic version” of Oh Land’s “White Nights.” Enjoy!

Happy birthday to actress Rhea Perlman who celebrates birthday number 64 today. You’d think because she played the sharp tongued and sometimes mean spirited waitress Carla on “Cheers” that she’d be the same way in real life. I’m here to tell you, she’s anything but mean. Rhea Perlman is very nice and actually pretty soft spoken in person. That’s always one of the things I enjoy about seeing a person on the screen versus real life. Also born on this day: actor Ewan McGregor, Gabe Kaplan, Christopher Walken, Richard Chamberlain, actress Shirley Jones, hockey Hall of Famer Gordie Howe, labor leader Cesar Chavez, composer Joseph Haydn, and Rene Descartes. Obviously, today is a great day to be born!

Someone Step Up
Labor leader Cesar Chavez would have celebrated his 85th birthday today, March 31, 2011. It’s nice to see that he is being immortalized in street art for all the great things he did. He founded the United Farm Workers (UFW) and was a civil rights activist. He called on his people to “Make a solemn promise: to enjoy our rightful part of the riches of this land, to throw off the yoke of being considered as agricultural implements or slaves. We are free men and we demand justice.” AMEN! The world needs more people like Cesar, so someone step up!

The countdown to the final LCD Soundsystem show is days away. I met the soon to be former lead singer, James Murphy. I couldn’t resist and I said to him “This is the part where I beg you not to break up the group.” He smiled and waved goodbye to the past in the photo he was so kind enough to take with me. Thanks James and just know that if you decide to reunite, we’ll be waiting! LCD Soundsystem’s final shows are March 30 and 31, 2011 at Terminal 5 and the final show will be April 1, 2011 at Madison Square Garden in New York.
