Happy birthday to the Goddess of Crochet, Olek! There is nothing she cannot crochet. Her exhibit “Knitting is For Pussies” opened last year at the Christopher Henry Gallery (and it’s still showing – so head over to 127 Elizabeth Street in New York) and the studio apartment she crocheted all the objects inside of catapulted her into art superstardom. Her art has been featured on every important art site and news program across the world. On Christmas Eve, she pulled off the impossible by crocheting the Wall Street Bull in the middle of the night. A video of the event went viral and the crocheted bikes she leaves behind in cities she visits are being sought after by art collectors and street thieves alike. I predicted that 2011 is going to be the year of Olek and I hate to say “I told you so” but I told you so! If you reside on the West Coast, you can see her exhibit “The Room is Green, The Sky Is Pink” at the Pacific Design Center. What comes next? Only time will tell, but everything this artist touches (or crochets) turns to gold so we’ll all have to stay tuned to see what she comes up with. Have a great birthday Olek and I hope you enjoy your last moments of peace and quiet before you get mobbed by fans in the street when you are out and about.
