I’ve seen Hanni El Khatib perform on both the East and West coasts and while there is often an East vs. West rivalry, one thing is sure – Hanni rocks hard in both places. Hanni El Khatib performed at New York’s Mercury Lounge on June 24, 2011. If his performance is a predictor of future success, he’s going to be huge. His music is garage rock that features elements of everything from pop to punk and even doo-wop! Hanni El Khatib is a two man band with Hanni on vocals and guitar and Nicky Fleming-Yaryan on drums. Hanni’s hour long set featured crowd favorites “Build. Destroy. Rebuild,” “Dead Wrong,” “You Rascal You,” and “Loved One.” He also played his cover of Funkadelic’s “I Got A Thing,” which can currently be heard in the new Just Do It campaign for Nike. It was really great seeing people singing along to the words of the songs and by the end of the show, the entire crowd had become a huge dance party/mosh pit. I highly recommend seeing Hanni El Khatib when he comes to your town. It was a really fun time. His debut album is set for release later this year and I am very excited to hear it. Rock and fuckin’ roll!
