Photos by G. Art by Ari Lankin.
Ari Lankin is not just an artist. He’s a fountain of creativity. I recently discovered his work and it was love at first sight. After a visit to his New York studio, it’s very clear that Ari Lankin is a name you’ll be hearing about for years to come. If you don’t know his work, it’s nearly impossible to categorize as he does everything from sketches to collage to abstract and realist paintings to sneaker design! It’s often intimidating to be around someone as creative as Ari Lankin, but from the moment I walked into his studio, he was down to earth and extremely interesting to talk to. Over the course of a couple of hours we talked about everything from spirituality to street art to our shared love of Picasso and our personal experiences meeting the singer Bjork. Lankin is extremely well read, well experienced and he has new ideas flowing constantly.
A walk through Ari Lankin’s studio is the equivalent to going into a cleverly arranged art exhibit as there are paintings from ceiling to floor varying in size from small to extremely large with abstract paintings hanging side by side with collages. While eclectic, it all fits perfectly because Ari wants the viewer to escape into another world, even if just for moments at a time. Your mind will not only take the trip into Ari’s world, but if it’s anything like the experience I had, it won’t want to come back.
The first painting I saw from Ari Lankin was his tribute to Spanish artist Jaume Plensa’s “Echo” sculpture, which is currently on display in Madison Square Park. Ari’s official website has a series of photos on his work in process on location as he made this amazing painting you see above. Lankin’s site also has a Sketch of the Day feature, so you can keep track of what this prolific artist is doing. Ari and I talked about the creative process and he draws inspiration from everything ranging from listening to music to hanging out with friends. In addition to the impressive list of styles Ari Lankin has conquered, he also does “series” paintings, whereby he will do a series of paintings that are all thematically similar. For example, he has done a series of ’emotional architecture’ paintings; a series of works where he has incorporated a letter from the alphabet in 26 different paintings; a series of electrical outlets (representing the ebb and flow of energy in the universe) as well as a series of mixed media paintings that feature T-shirts once owned by the artist.
Ari Lankin recently designed the art on a high top sneaker for Adidas! He’s also done a series of paintings inspired by his love (and former addition, as he described it) to sneakers.
Ari Lankin mentioned a bunch of exciting projects he has coming up and in a variety of media, so you should bookmark his official site to stay in touch with the latest from this art star on the rise. He’ll be unveiling these projects soon and I am excited about all of them! One of the projects is a group show he is participating in called “Clipped,” which will take place at Le Salon D’art (located at 90 Stanton Street at Ludlow) throughout the month of July 2011. You won’t want to miss it. I cannot thank Ari enough for giving us all a glimpse into his world. I must stress again how talented, smart, prolific and cool Ari is – the real deal, according2g. There is no doubt that he’ll be a huge success and I am looking forward to seeing and hearing all about it!
