Hauser & Wirth in New York are presenting Peruvian artist David Zink Yi’s first solo exhibit in New York entitled “Pneuma.”  The exhibit is a mixed media show featuring seven expirimental works that juxtapose photography, video installation, film and sculpture.  As David Zink Yi is Peruvian born and based in Berlin, the viewer rises above the differences in culture and language that both places offer. Using imagery of life and death, Yi’s works transcend these barriers into a universal understanding of our identity in the world.

The above work, Untitled (Architeuthis) is a 660 pound ceramic squid!  David Zink Yi represents the implications of the damage being done to our environment in this work and making it more dramatic, the squid is laying in a pool of blood (but it’s actually corn syrup).  I spoke with David Zink Yi at the opening night gala reception and I had no choice but to ask the question – as the exibit will be up for a month, is the syrup going to ruin the hardwood floor at the gallery?  Without flinching, David told me “I guess I’ll have to let you know when the show is over.”  Fair enough!

On the second floor is a video installation that is in stark contrast to the ground floor at Hauser & Wirth.  While the downstairs area has images of death and decay, the upstairs gallery presents a hopeful look at the possibilities life has to offer.  The picture above does not capture the dual sided installation that also features text written across the walls of the gallery taking the viewer across the Peruvian jungle in search of a rare bird.  I recommend you check out “Pneuma” in person to capture the feelings that still images cannot give you.

“Pneuma” by David Zink Yi is showing at Hauser & Wirth in New York through July 29, 2011.
