"Black Velvet - The Godfather of Soul" by Kelsey Bennett. Now showing at Christopher Henry Gallery in New York through August 19, 2011.

File this one under “funky and totally random.”  Not only is the Christopher Henry Gallery in New York showing an exhibit of photographs of a James Brown impersonator, but the photos were shot by the real life Tony Bennett’s granddaughter, Kelsey Bennett.  “Black Velvet – The Godfather of Soul,” follows the on and off stage antics of James Brown impersonator Black Velvet (aka Charles Bradley).  I cannot guarantee that the photos will make you feel good (bad pun), but if you attended the opening night reception like I did, you’ll know that the soul food buffet made everyone feel nice – like sugar and spice!

If James Brown impersonators are not your thing, don’t worry – the second floor of the gallery features Matt and Mark Engler’s “Streets of Glory,” a mixed media exhibit that has painting, sculpture and a fluorescent green bear!

The Christopher Henry Gallery is located at 127 Elizabeth Street in Manhattan.  Both exhibits are showing until August 14, 2011.
