Happy 214th birthday to writer Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. Back when I was in high-school, Shelley’s works were on our required reading list. To make our lives more interesting, my best friend Sharon and I always kept ourselves amused by changing the titles of books or making up funny songs to aid in our memorization of facts (read: you haven’t lived until you’ve heard Sharon sing the prologue to Geoffrey Chaucer’s “The Canterbury Tales” and in Olde English, no less – which she STILL has committed to memory). One of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s famous books was “A Vindication of the Rights of Women.” In those days, since Sharon and I were always right even if teachers thought we were wrong, we created our own inside joke to denote when were proven correct. This is what is known as a Vindication of the Rights of Geoffrey/Sharon (respectively) or also known as a VOTROG/VOTROS. Throughout the years, I’ve had my share of VOTROGs and Sharon has had her share of VOTROSs, but it’s very rare for crossover.
The fact that this post has even been written to share with the masses is both a VOTROG and a VOTROS!
Happy birthday Mary!
