Jerry lives! In our hearts and minds at least. Jerry Garcia, leader of The Grateful Dead is in another dimension celebrating his birthday today. I’ve never been the world’s biggest Grateful Dead fan, but I completely understand the appeal of the band to Deadheads. For the years the Grateful Dead was around, they rarely played the same set list twice (or if they did, the versions of the songs were different). Also, the band always hooked up their fans with great album art work, merchandise and even allowed a special section at concerts allowing fans to record the show! I also love Jerry Garcia’s neck tie collection featuring his colorful art work. On the day that he died, it was a triple whammy for me. I was wearing a Jerry Garcia tie and I also received tickets in the mail to an upcoming Grateful Dead show (which was to be my first Dead experience). One of my favorite teachers in high school was (and still is) a big Deadhead, and I remember calling to console him after I’d heard the news. It was a really memorably bad day.
Wherever you are Jerry, you are gone but not forgotten!
