The Austra and Cold Cave show at Bowery Ballroom in New York on August 6, 2011 was sold out for a reason – both bands rocked! Austra is a Canadian new wave band and Cold Cave is a New York based darkwave band. Austra took the stage at 10 pm and played for a little under one hour. Their set consisted of tracks from the band’s debut album “Feel it Break.” I was probably the only person in the venue who had not heard their music prior to them stepping onto stage and I became a fan almost immediately. Lead singer Katie Stelmanis’ voice is powerful and reminded me a lot of Zola Jesus. The beats she sang on top of were thick and funky and the audience loved every second.
Katie Stelmanis’ stage presence was great as she flailed her arms in the air, totally lost in the moment as she sang incredibly catchy songs. Spotted in the crowd were singer MNDR, Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Nick Zinner and Vampire Weekend’s lead singer Ezra Koenig.
I learned the true meaning of the genre Dance-Punk as Cold Cave hit the stage at 11 pm. Backed with flashing strobe lights and a screen projecting trippy visuals, lead singer Wesley Eisold had an amazing stage presence. Every song had a hard dance beat and Wesley Eisold shouted, sung and screamed his vocals! The entire venue had turned into a huge dance party and by the time I left the concert, most people had gotten a bit sweatty. Cold Cave recently released “Cherish The Light Years” and if you need a party record, this might just be the one.
