Long Island’s own Twin Sister took a ferry ride to Manhattan and played a sold out show at the Mercury Lounge on September 29, 2011. The band was celebrating the release of their latest album “In Heaven.” Twin Sister has been compared to sounding like a cross between Portishead and Cocteau Twins. I agree after seeing them live. Lead singer Andrea Estella had a wig where the hair went down past her knees and it was amusing watching her shake her hair all night. Their music had cool beats and I found myself at the merch table after the show picking up a copy of “In Heaven” after their hour long set was over. Twin Sister will be touring Europe in the fall of 2011, so catch them when they come to your town!

Don't Flick Your Butts On The Ground
Good one, MEA! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – teach common sense in school. It’s way more important than learning about how our government works because what we are taught is all theory and not the truth.
On September 28, 2011, Los Angeles’ Foster The People made a triumphant return to New York, playing their second of two sold out shows at Terminal 5. I knew when I saw them earlier this year at the much smaller Bowery Ballroom they were going to be huge, and I was so pleased to see that the rest of the world has caught on. In some ways, I expected their fan base to be emo hipsters, but instead it seemed to consist of tween girls. But then again, when you think about the fact that Foster the People’s music is extremely catchy and the guys in the band are all hotties, it makes perfect sense. Reptar and Cults opened the show (stay tuned for a video from Cults) and they were great. Possibly my only complaint of the night was that Foster the People’s set was barely an hour and they didn’t even play all the songs off of their fantastic debut “Torches.” However, what they lacked in set time, they made up in lighting. Their stage presence has gotten bigger in every way and their laser lights show was extremely cool. Lead singer Mark Foster talked about their participation with the Do Good Bus, an organization that travels around to various cities and helps local communities. Also, we were treated to an as yet unreleased song called “Ruby” that Foster promised would be released some day. Every song was a sing-a-long and highlights of course were the amazing “Helena Beat,” “Miss You,” “Houdini” and of course “Pumped Up Kicks.” Click play to see what “Pumped Up Kicks” looked like from the front row!
Move over baby, whole lotta shakin’ goin’ on! The killer, Jerry Lee Lewis is 76 years old today. I had the great privilege of seeing him perform as he opened the show of both nights of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 25th anniversary benefit concerts a few years ago. Age hasn’t slowed him down at all and he delivered a killer version of “Great Balls of Fire.” Rather than kick the piano seat over as he used to do, he gently pushed it across the stage. It was pretty funny and it got him a standing ovation at Madison Square Garden (both nights!) Who said New York crowds are so tough?
The other night when I saw Girls in concert, I didn’t know what to expect. Their new album “Father, Son, Holy Ghost” is burning up the internet with great buzz, but I like to find out for myself before I believe what I read. From the second San Francisco’s Girls hit the stage until the moment they exited, my jaw dropped open in amazement. The album scored a place in my best albums of 2011 on my first listen. Their music is epic. Spanning genres from Surf music to gorgeous ballads to punk rock, Girls know how it’s done. The song you are about to see, “Vomit” instantly became one of my favorite songs of 2011 the first time I heard it. I challenge you to listen to this song and not fall head over heels in love. When you hear the end of the song with lead singer Christopher Owens singing “come into my heart,” you might need to get the Kleenex because you probably won’t hear that much emotion and vulnerability again in 2011. The backup singers harmonizing with him at the end of the song are powerful enough to make Pink Floyd tip their hats. Please note, when I uploaded the video, it seemed to have cropped the top of the screen, so apologies for that. The music should make up for it. Girls are amazing. Spread the word!
