1980s Electro-pop gods Human League wrapped up their 2011 US tour with a show at New York’s Best Buy Theater on September 23, 2011. It’s been a decade since I’ve seen them in concert and tonight’s show was worth the wait. The show began with a set from fellow 1980s gods Men Without Hats (more to come, so stay tuned). Human League took the stage around 9:30 pm and played for about an hour and a half. For me, it was the dream set list. Every hit was played including their classics “Don’t You Want Me,” “Heart Like A Wheel,” “(Keep Feeling) Fascination,” “Love Action,” “Human,” “Mirror Man,” and “Being Boiled.” In addition lead singer Philip Oakey’s solo track “Together In Electric Dreams” (which was the final song of the night) was also played. Human League also played some tracks off their new album “Credo” including “Egomaniac” and “Night People,” my favorite song off the record. A video of “Night People” will be coming soon, so stick around for that.
The band utilized a huge projection screen behind them, so there were great visuals for every track. The trio of Philip Oakey, Susan Ann Sulley and Joanne Catherall sounded as if no time had passed since their glory days and there were even several outfit changes during the concert. It was great to hear the sound of the crowd literally and figuratively as they sang along to every song. There were a few sound problems, but the band overcame them and the audience loved every minute. Sometimes it’s easy to forget how big some of their songs were then and still are to this day until you hear thousands of people lose their minds when the band is performing it in front of your face. Like the final song of the night stated, “we’ll always be together in electric dreams.” Thanks for a great night Human League!
