Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings concluded a 7 night run in New York with a sold out show at Manhattan’s Bowery Ballroom on December 14, 2011. If you don’t know Sharon Jones’ music and/or stage presence, you are missing out! She is one funky soul sister whose sound could loosely be described as Patti LaBelle meets James Brown! She runs a tight band and the Dap Kings are so funky! From the second Sharon Jones hit the stage, she didn’t just work it, she owned it! Shaking her moneymaker in every song and wearing a fringe covered dress, thus making her body moving even more entertaining to watch, Sharon Jones’ performance was absolutely sensational.
During several of the songs, Sharon Jones brought up members from the audience to shake it on stage and this was of course after Sharon Jones showed the crowd a few of her favorite dances, which included the mashed potato and the tighten up (Archie Bell and the Drells – represent!). She told stories in between songs, “tested” the band’s reflexes by calling their names and having them funk out “on the one.” By the end of the nearly two hour show, Sharon Jones wore us out from dancing and grooving on a really chilly winter New York night, but such is the price of funk and soul.
Thanks to Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings for helping end this year on such a funky high note with one of the best shows I’ve seen this year! If you get the chance to see Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, do not hesitate! She has some funk that’ll kill ya!
I met Sharon after the concert and she was extremely cool. I thanked her for such a great show and she was very nice. Thanks again Sharon! You work it in ways I never thought possible!
