On February 25, 2012, Scottish rockers The Twilight Sad performed at Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn. The band recently embarked on a US tour, but due to VISA problems (read: please get it together USA, WTF?!), the band was denied entry into the country for 5 days forcing them to cancel some dates. The Twilight Sad is here now and their show was incredible! I saw them perform two years ago and that show was my first exposure to their music. I fell in love with their deep, dark and rockin’ beats coupled with lead singer James Graham’s intense stage presence. James Graham appears to be channelling Joy Division’s Ian Curtis and Jim Morrison as he lets the music take him to another place, and all at the same time, he delivers a very powerful vocal performance. Musically, their songs tend to have a slow build with a great climactic ending.
The Twilight Sad performed many new tracks off their 2012 release “No One Can Ever Know” including the lead single “Another Bed.” A lot of the titles of their song titles are not used in their lyrics so it’s always hard to keep track of their setlist. They played two of my favorite tracks “Reflection of the Television” and “I Became a Prostitute,” and I would recommend those songs as a good starting place if you are unfamiliar with the music of The Twilight Sad. In an age where so few bands have little to add to the musical palate, The Twilight Sad are here to remind us all that rock and roll will never die. Thanks to The Twilight Sad for a great night!
