O M G!  The last time I saw Grace Jones in concert, it blew my mind on such an epic scale, I knew I had to witness her next show from the front row.  Best decision I’ve made in a long time!  Grace Jones performed a one-off, way sold out show at New York’s Roseland Ballroom on October 27, 2012.

Grace Jones is such an amazing performer, it’s hard to put into words just how incredible she is.  The show was filled with costume changes, head piece changes, great songs, wind machines, laser lights and confetti!  She kicked things off around 9:30 pm with her cover of Iggy Pop’s “Nightclubbing.”  The lights were dark except for a hat she wore that had lights swirling around her.  “This is the Life” from her most recent album “Hurricane” followed and thus began the costume changes.  Towards the end of each song, she ran backstage and changed head pieces.  Deafening applause could be heard and Grace told the adoring crowd, “I love you already.”

“My Jamaican Guy” was next and Grace talked about drinking her favorite Jamaican cocktail.  Speaking of cock, Grace also pointed out “I really need to suck dick.”  The show could have ended there and it would have made my night, but it kept on rolling!

She did the not often performed “Private Life,” next followed by a cover of “Demolition Man” (originally recorded by The Police) and “Libertango (I’ve Seen That Face Before).”

She spoke to the audience in French before launching into Edith Piaf’s “La Vie En Rose,” where she missed her cue and started the song from the middle.  She was holding back the laughter and started the song over again.  A 13 minute video will be coming soon, so stay tuned!

“Well Well Well” and “Williams Blood” from “Hurricane” were next, and yes, she addressed the fact that New York is threatened with an impending hurricane, due to hit the North East as early as Sunday night.  The Normal’s “Warm Leatherette” was next, which featured Grace reflecting light off a shiny ring on her finger.  The light show was about to get even more awesome as she performed “Love is the Drug” by Roxy Music wearing a sparkly hat with laser lights reflecting off it.

“Pull Up To The Bumper” was next and Grace jumped into the pit and started dancing with the front row.  Little did I know what was about to happen next.  She got right in front of me and we locked eyes and she told me to get onto the stage.  When Grace Jones tells you to get on stage, you do not question it!  You do as you are told by Miss Grace Jones!!!  The next thing I knew, security guards lifted me onto the stage and there I was dancing with Grace Jones!  (see first photo).  It’s all a blur from that point on, but from what I am told, I looked pretty good out there holding my own with the fiercest woman on the planet!  I was wearing Penguin Prison’s T-shirt “Don’t Fuck With My Money” and Grace Jones announced to the crowd, “I want that shirt.”  I did what anyone in their right mind would do, I gave Grace Jones the shirt off my back – literally!  OMG!  Off stage, Grace told me to wait backstage for her after the show, so I didn’t get to see the last few songs “Feel Up,” “Slave to The Rhythm” (where she performed it whilst hoola hooping!) and the finale “Hurricane.”

Once the show was over, I was hanging out backstage and Grace was super cool.  We took a photo together and she autographed a couple of CDs that I had brought with me.  I am not sure I will ever get over such a cool and unexpected surprise as this, so Grace, my new friend – THANK YOU!!!!

Ha! What a fantastic experience. Did she keep your shirt?!

I was there and you did great, Geoff! (since it’s all a blur for you — and you did have a kind of “I can’t believe this is happening to me!” expression throughout) I did wonder if you got to see the rest of the show, and am glad to hear that Grace met up with you again. Two questions: 1) Did she really “feel up” your junk to the extent it appeared onstage? (Grace smiling: “Sometimes big things come in small packages!”) 2) Did she really keep your shirt?

AMAZING concert I’ll remember forever as well. Cheers!

Thanks Matt. I heard video exists and I am excited/horrified to see it. She didn’t feel me up, but she looked down my pants! I didn’t hear that comment about big things in small packages. OMG! Hilarious!!! The whole thing was SOOOO unexpected. I know I was juggling my bag and jacket whilst dancing, so that outta be interesting to see when video comes out. Yes, she kept my shirt, but for the photo I got with my arms around her afterwards, I hope she wears it well and enjoys it because I had the best time ever!

I was literally right behind you for most of the show and felt that she couldn’t have picked a better person to take up on stage with her!! I was the kid by himself in the brown jacket and glasses (none of my friends wanted to go, but I wasnt going to let that stop me from seeing Grace for the first time!). I was so annoyed when that photographer lady was shoving her way through the crowd and was so thrilled to have you there to tell her off rightfully so! We did NOT wait 5 hours for someone to shove us out of our spots! I dont know if Grace saw you defending your well deserved spot or if karma came to you immediately but it was perfect that you of everyone there had this most incredible experience.

It was such a phenomenal show and really changed my life!! I will neber be bored or boring so long as I live, haha, there’s no excuse for mediocrity when you can be as brilliant as Grace. I plan on seeing her every single time she’s in town. I found your blog through searching about the show on twitter by the way. Im so happy for you!

G you can die now. That is the BEST story EVER.

I was beyond jealous when she pulled you onstage but I would never have been able to hold my own as well as you did. That was one of the best concerts I’ve seen in a long time and I love that Grace is both more fierce and more wonderful than I ever imagined. And how amazing was her voice? She sounded better live than she does on albums.

Went down with 3 other friends from MTL and all we talked about on the way was how AMAZING Saturday night will be once Grace hits the stage again at RoseLand. What a night! What a show! Her son also did a wicked set.

[...] One lucky guy got pulled up to dance with Grace, a few minutes into it her hand was down his pants. Now that’s an experience you will never forget. It might had been a tad bit awkward though, Grace’s son was in her backup band. But if the shoestring covering Grace’s ass and vagina didn’t bother him–grabbing a guy’a cock was probably just an average day at the Joneses. [...]

Awesome show – but the real question is – where do we get the shirt that you wore !!!!! And you should have stepped out from behind the drum when you took it off :)

  • G said,

The shirt is by the band Penguin Prison (www.penguinprison.com) from their single “Don’t Fuck With My Money.” Every song on their debut album is AWESOME, so I hope you check them out!
