Without Shuggie Otis, there would be no Prince.  Without Prince, there would be no D’Angelo, and so on… Shuggie Otis has been fusing jazz, R&B, blues, funk and gospel for over 40 years and he’s still going strong.  Shuggie Otis performed in Central Park at Summerstage on August 11, 2013 and the crowd showed this underrated legend the love he deserves.  Shuggie made sure to shine a spotlight on each member of his band as they took their time with sax, trumpet, organ and drum solos and Shuggie himself funked out on the guitar.  One of the many highlights was the song “Strawberry Letter 23” which Shuggie penned.

I was fortunate enough to hang out with Shuggie backstage after the concert and we talked about music and life in LA (where he currently lives and where I’ve formerly lived).  It was awesome to find that Shuggie Otis is extremely down to earth considering the impact he’s made on the music scene.  Thanks again Shuggie!
