Photos by G. Art by Greg Haberny.
You had me at the first sentence of the press release: “In a nutshell, “Burn All Crayons” is the artist’s first-hand account of the over medication of our youth.” It goes on to say, “[the exhibit] exemplifies and amplifies Greg Haberny’s concerns about society’s preoccupation and over-zealous practice of prescribing pills as the panacea.” When you walk inside of the Lyons Wier Gallery and feast your eyes on “Burn All Crayons,” you will see a plethora of humorous jabs at society, the instant gratification generation, the ‘distract the public with shiny objects’ mentality and also the effects of medication without dealing with our problems.
The ceiling of the gallery is filled with pencils that have been flung into the ceiling (see last photo for closeup) and it’s just one tiny fraction of this must see exhibit.
By the time you leave the gallery, hopefully you will have laughed a lot and also be appalled at the current status of society. Maybe just maybe it will inspire you to become the change you want to see in the world.
“Burn All Crayons” by Greg Haberny is showing at Lyons Wier Gallery through October 6, 2013. The gallery is located at 524 West 24th Street. You can find out more here.
