On September 6, 2013, Depeche Mode and Bat For Lashes rocked our worlds at their sold out show at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.  The show started promptly at 7:30 PM, with Natasha Khan (better known as Bat For Lashes) hitting the stage.  If you are unfamiliar with her music, she has a powerful voice that is somewhat of a cross between Bjork and Florence Welch and her songs are dramatic and epic.  This was my first time seeing her perform and it was so worth the wait.  She hypnotized the crowd with songs such as “Laura,” “All Your Gold,” and the show closer, “Daniel.”  After signing songs that really showed off her great voice, she would humbly say thanks to the crowd and if you weren’t already in love with her, you fell hard after that!   Her 2013 release “The Haunted Man” is very underrated, so please check it out.

Slightly before 9 pm, the main attraction, Depeche Mode came out.  Smartly, they started off with 2 tracks from their latest album “Delta Machine,” (“Welcome to my World” and “Angel”). Lead singer Dave Gahan looked healthier to me than he has in years and he was extra flamboyant, extra animated and he danced and pranced all over the stage for the duration of the show.  Armed with a huge screen behind them that projected visuals as they performed the songs of our generation, it’s mind blowing to think that Depeche Mode have been around for three decades, are sounding better than ever and show no signs of slowing down.

Dave took many opportunities to perform closely with Martin Gore and Martin also took over the spotlight for show highlights such as “Home,” and a stripped down version of “But Not Tonight,” which is sung by Dave on the studio version.   A video of “But Not Tonight” will be coming soon, so stay tuned!  Though Depeche Mode did the obligatory handful of tracks from their new album, they also padded the show with hit after hit after hit.

Hearing tracks such as “Policy of Truth,” “Walking In My Shoes,” “Personal Jesus,” and “Enjoy The Silence,” pretty much made the crowd go completely ballistic and even though at times, one would rather hear really obscure songs instead of the obvious hits, being in a stadium full of people reaching out to touch faith still gives me chills every time!  Another major highlight was the not very often played “Black Celebration,” which was a stadium sing-a-long and is such a welcomed fuck you to mainstream radio!

Surprisingly, Depeche Mode resurrected one of their earliest hits “Just Can’t Get Enough” for this tour and it was a very welcomed addition to the set.  You may not think of Depeche Mode as a stadium band, but after seeing them in concert, you will never think of them otherwise!  Thanks DM for another mind-blowing show!

Wow is all I have to say…not really cuz this show rocked & it calls for much praise!!!! This is my 6th time seeing DM with my wife and I didn’t sit for one second. I love the fact that all ages come to their show (from as young as 8 to those hitting their golden years). The fan base is alive and kicking just like the bands constant, perfect performance. They never disappoint and they keep you yearning for more !!! Thank you David, martin and Fletcher for keeping it fresh for all the masses !!!!!
