10 Twenty 10 at Claire Oliver in New York. Now showing through June 16, 2012
New York! Be sure to get your art on this weekend and stop by Claire Oliver in Chelsea to celebrate the historic 10 year anniversary of the gallery in New York and their 20th year in business! Wow! What an accomplishment! They’ve pulled out the big guns for this exhibit and are showcasing the work of 10 artists who represent the artistic vision of the gallery. The impressive list of artists in the exhibition is Norbert Brunner, Beth Cavener Stichter, Andy Denzler, Andrew Erdos, Herb Jackson, Stephanie Lempert, Jesse McCloskey, Jennifer Poon, Bernardi Roig and Judith Schaechter.

On a personal note, I’ve had so many great experiences at Claire Oliver and I’ve been exposed to a lot of life changing art and I’ve met so many great artists inside their gallery. In addition, it’s always a delight to speak with gallery owners Claire and Ian and discuss art and our ‘past lives’ in California. For these memories you cannot put a price on, I am truly thankful and I wish them even more success in the next chapter of their gallery. The photos you see are merely a tiny sample of the exhibit, so don’t delay and head over to the gallery to toast their first 10 years in New York and see some really great art while you are at it!

New art trend: Why have one exhibit when you can have many exhibits? Lately, I’ve been seeing the same artist having multiple exhibitions simultaneously at different galleries within the same city (and often a bonus exhibition in another city). Photographer Ryan McGinley is riding on that curve as he’s got two exhibits in New York currently. Team Gallery is hosting two separate exhibitions from McGinley – “Animals” and “Grids.”

“Grids” focuses on individual portraits of fans at concerts and “Animals” shows nude models posing with live animals!

“Grids” is showing at Team Gallery, located at 47 Wooster Street, and “Animals” is showing at 83 Grand Street in New York. Both exhibits run until June 2, 2012.

Finally! Rock goddess Courtney Love is making headlines not for her scandalous tweets and her wild life, but instead for a side of her that the public has not gotten to see – her art! “And She’s Not Even Pretty,” at Fred Torres Collaborations in New York showcases 45 works of art by Courtney Love. Her drawings reference the isolation of the Rock and Roll life, shattered romances, insecurity and rejection.

During the press preview for the exhibit, Courtney Love fielded questions and she mentioned that most of the works in this exhibit were made between 2011 and 2012. It seemed that Courtney was uneasy talking to the art press but she stayed to do interviews and answer questions for about an hour and a half! I asked her who her favorite artists were and she mentioned Julian Schnabel and David LaChapelle, but said “there are so many I love.”

If you are a fan of Courtney Love’s music, you will not want to miss this exhibit as you will get to see a very vulnerable side to the hard living singer. The works range in size and below, you can see my favorite panel in the exhibit.

John Chamberlain - Choices. Now showing at the Guggenheim Museum in New York through May 13, 2012
Prepare to be wowed when you go to the Guggenheim Museum in New York for an retrospective of works by John Chamberlain entitled “Choices.” Chamberlain made sculptures out of scrap metal from used car parts and his career spanned decades.

I’d estimate there are no less than 40 sculptures of varying sizes, shapes and colors and seeing all of these works together is extremely impressive. It’s heart breaking that Chamberlain died in December 2011, so he did not get to see the fantastic arrangement of his art in the spiral shaped museum.

The “Group Graff” show at Dorian Grey Gallery in New York is both interesting and perplexing all at the same time. As an avid lover of street art, it’s always great to see works in person by Banksy and Keith Haring. Mixing those legendary names with some relatively unknowns who are allegedly making an impact on the street scene (at least according to the press release), was a bit confusing to me. Keep in mind, I enjoyed seeing the art and would recommend this exhibit to fans of street art, but in some cases, a cropped photograph of a graffiti tag is more expensive than purchasing an original work of art from the actual street artist!

Did the curator just happen upon a stack of street art and decide to launch an exhibit or was there more thought involved? That’s for you to decide. I think that putting a work of art by Banksy and one by imitator Hanksy in the same room is a crime! If you need help curating next time, please give me a call! An international fan base of readers will agree that I know what I am talking about!
