RIP Donna Summer
The Queen of Disco is dead! Donna Summer died at age 63 of cancer according to the internet (so it must be true). I was never the world’s biggest Donna fan, but I did like “She Works Hard For the Money,” “I Feel Love” and “Love To Love You Baby.” I found it hard to get over that Donna, who remained in the spotlight long after disco died, owed a great deal of that success to her gay audience and rather than be grateful, she was influenced by conservative religious beliefs and allegedly said that AIDS was a divine punishment to gays for their immoral lifestyle. Rather than EVER apologize, she instead denied over and over ever saying it. Can’t help but wonder if those words haunted her to her dying day. While Donna has done her last dance on earth, she’s now in the club of immortals who’ll be disco dancing eternally. RIP, Donna!

Adam Yauch (aka MCA) of The Beastie Boys via Google Images
So sad to hear that Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch (aka MCA) has died from cancer at age 47. I am old enough to have been around when the Beastie Boys first hit the scene in the 80s and I remember at the time hearing the samples they used in their music which lead me to “discover” bands such as Led Zeppelin. For that I am eternally grateful. I feel like a part of my childhood has been ripped away with his passing, but since death is unavoidable, let’s grieve and get on with the show. Thanks for all the great songs that I have loved for upwards of 20 years MCA! Rest in peace!

Dick Clark
Sad news out of Hollywood. TV icon Dick Clark has died of a heart attack at age 82. Effective immediately, New Year’s Eve is canceled! Just kidding. The icon of the final day of the year was so nice and I was fortunate enough to meet him many times over the years and he was always gracious to fans. They don’t make them like that anymore, and it’s a pity. RIP Dick! And also, thanks for all the great bands I discovered because of American Bandstand.

Gary Carter
I am so sad! Baseball Hall of Famer Gary Carter died today following complications from a brain tumor. I’ve met Gary Carter so many times and he was always a nice guy in my experiences. Because he was in a position to help others, he decided during his playing career that he would only autograph baseball cards post-1985 (it could have been post 1984) for a $25 donation to leukemia research. Though that decision cost me hundreds of dollars in the 1990s, I gladly paid it. RIP Gary!
