“Art Fare” by Andy Freeberg at Andrea Meislen Gallery in New York is so great!  When I first saw his works, I thought they were set up, which would have still made me love this exhibit, but after speaking with the artist at the opening night reception, I learned that he caught these amazing scenes as they happened.

Freeberg attended major art fares and was able to capture gallerists, art aficionados and workers in intimate moments setting up their shows, or in most cases – completely ignoring everything except their cell phones!  SO GOOD!!!!    Of course, it would be better if it weren’t this way, but it is and nobody wants to admit it.  But lucky there are people out there like Andy Freeberg who exposes it and shows the world how ridiculous it looks to be in an iPhone coma, especially when you are surrounded by gorgeous works of art.

New York!  Head over to Jonathan Levine Gallery to check out two interesting exhibits:  “Unforeseeable” by Rafael Silveira (covered here) and “Power Tripping” by Australian street artist Anthony Lister.  If you’re a long time reader of the site (and I thank you for your patronage), you’re familiar with Lister’s work both on the streets and in the galleries.

There are at least 30 works in “Power Tripping” and Lister has painted frames on the walls.  Photos do not do justice to his works, so I urge you to check out this exhibit in person.  Part expressionism, part Basquiat, Lister also combines using oil with spray paint, keeping it real with his street art roots.

Rafael Silveira

Brazillian artist Rafael Silveira has just opened his debut exhibit “Unforeseeable” at Jonathan Levine Gallery in New York.  His art combines classical painting with a twist of surreal imagery.

I loved the ornate frames and I loved the Travis Louie meets Mark Ryden absurdest characters in his paintings such as the Popsicle girl featured above.  Silveira says that he was inspired by walking around in his native Brazil where he encounters the bizarre and preposterous on a daily basis.  I can totally relate!

“Unforeseeable” by Rafael Silveira is showing concurrently with Anthony Lister’s also great exhibit
“Power Tripping,” (more on that one soon).  Both shows are at Jonathan Levine Gallery (located at 529 West 20th Street, 9th Floor) in New York through July 26, 2014.

Modern Day Zelig: An Accidental Encounter with Kim Kardashian

In case you needed more proof that I am a modern day Zelig, who is always at the right place at the right time, here’s another one for ya!  Yesterday I was out and about in SoHo with a friend when all of a sudden, we saw a TON of paparazzi on the street about to strike.  As I am no stranger to these types of scenes, we decided to see who it was.  It turned out to be Kim Kardashian.  What a let down!!!!  I thought it was going to be someone really good.  You can see the look of disappointment in my face in these paparazzi shots that ended up on the interweb.  Pretty funny.

It’s no secret that I think Kim Kardashian has absolutely ZERO talent and should not be famous AT ALL, let alone be the subject of international headlines every day, but I will say this – being subjected to that much paparazzi is almost as vile as her being famous enough to warrant that much.   There is no doubt in my mind that these kinds of scum of the earth (and those that enable this behavior by reading gossip sites and supporting these people are equally as guilty) will be responsible for someone’s death just for a picture.  These paparazzi were SCREAMING at passersby on the street to move out of the way with profanity and when Kim K. walked out of the building, it felt unsafe because there was so much chaos going on, a wise criminal could easily slip in and slip out after causing some sort of damage.

It’s a matter of time.  You can quote me on that.
