Gary Carter

I am so sad!  Baseball Hall of Famer Gary Carter died today following complications from a brain tumor.  I’ve met Gary Carter so many times and he was always a nice guy in my experiences.  Because he was in a position to help others, he decided during his playing career that he would only autograph baseball cards post-1985 (it could have been post 1984) for a $25 donation to leukemia research.  Though that decision cost me hundreds of dollars in the 1990s, I gladly paid it.  RIP Gary!

Happy Birthday, Tom Seaver

Back in my other life when I was obsessed with the game of baseball, I used to enjoy meeting today’s birthday boy, Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver.  He was not always nice to fans and in fact, I probably saw him not sign more times than he did, but if you were fortunate to have a good experience meeting him, the reward was a really cool autograph.  Happy birthday, Tom!

Also born today: actors Danny DeVito and Rock Hudson, Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels, singer Gordon Lightfoot, model Lauren Hutton and director Martin Scorsese.

Dwight Gooden

Dwight Gooden

Happy birthday to former major league pitcher Dwight Gooden.  Even though when you live in New York, you have to chose whether to love the Yankees and hate the Mets or vice versa, coming from California, I loved both teams.  Now I couldn’t care less.  When I was in love with baseball, it was exhilarating to see Dwight Gooden pitch. He was absolutely amazing.  He fell victim to drug and alcohol problems and it ruined his career. So sad.  I hope he has overcome those problems and is doing better now.

Happy Birthday, Mike Schmidt

Mike Schmidt

Mike Schmidt

Happy birthday to baseball slugger and Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt.  Back in my other life when I used to love baseball, it was always a thrill to see Mike Schmidt play.  The above pictured card is from a brand of baseball cards called Fleer.  This particular card is from their 1987 set, which I’ve gotten completely autographed by every player in the set.  There’s 660 cards.  That’s not an easy accomplishment, but then again, if you know anything about me, you know I strive for excellence – while thinking outside the box, conforming to as few rules as possible and always staying a fringe dweller.

Also born today:  rapper Lil Wayne, actress Gwyneth Paltrow, singer Meat Loaf and actress Jayne Meadows.

Happy Birthday, Cal Ripken, Jr.

Cal Ripken Jr

Cal Ripken, Jr.

Happy birthday to baseball great Cal Ripken, Jr.  I’ve met him so many times and he’s one of the few baseball players I can honestly say was nice every single time I saw him.  It’s so impressive considering he was one of the greatest shortstops to ever play the game of baseball.  I hope C-list players whose egos are as large as their salaries take a lesson from a legend.

Also born today: actor Rupert Grint, comedian David Chappelle, actress Marlee Matlin and actor Steve Guttenberg.
