Indian artist Subodh Gupta’s latest exhibition “A Glass of Water” is now on display at Hauser and Wirth in New York. The mixed media presentation explores the concept of measurement in relation to food and hunger. There are many large scale sculptures featured in “A Glass of Water,” that will have you thinking about the notion of luxury versus depletion long after you leave the exhibit.
In this work entitled “Atta,” it appears that a mound of dough is about to be molded and baked. Upon further inspection, you’ll see that the dough is inedible. Though it is surrounded by real flour, it’s actually bronze simulacrum. Once again – the concept of abundance versus starvation as well as luxury versus depletion come into play.
