Meshach Taylor

Sad news out of Hollywood.  Actor Meshach Taylor has died from cancer.  I met Meshach several times during the height of his run as Anthony on “Designing Women,” and he was always extremely nice towards his fans.  As you can see above, he had a beautiful autograph too.  Rest easy Meshach!  Thanks for all the laughs you’ve given us!

James Franco - New Film Stills

James Franco – New Film Stills

Love or hate James Franco, the one thing you can’t accuse him of is playing it safe.  James Franco is having a big month in New York in April 2014, as he is starring in a Broadway production of “Of Mice And Men,” (I saw it and it’s excellent, by the way) and at the Pace Gallery in Chelsea, he’s recreated an exhibit by Cindy Sherman (“Untitled Film Stills”) called “New Film Stills.”  Excuse the glare on these photos.  You gotta do the best you can when the sun is out on a lovely day and the art is encased in glass.

Recreating the exact poses Cindy Sherman did nearly 30 years ago, Franco is seen looking rather effeminate save for his facial hair, which makes this series of photos even better, according 2 G.

For those who think they’ve got James Franco all figured out, this exhibit will make them guess again and I really love that.  So many artists of all genres play it safe, and Franco for the sake of art (or perhaps even shock value) is not afraid to cross over the line, even if that finds him wearing a dress!  Go James!

“New Film Stills” by James Franco is showing at Pace Gallery (located at 508 West 25th Street) in New York through May 3, 2014.  It would be a drag if you missed it!

An Encounter with Sir Ian McKellen

I love Sir Ian McKellen.  From roles in X-Men to Lord of the Rings, he is great in everything and I even love his homage to ‘Thriller’ rap in “Invisible Light” by Scissor Sisters.  The last time I saw Mr. McKellen, none of the above mentioned artworks had come out, so it was nice to know that all these years later (and after being knighted), he is still a nice guy.  Thanks Sir Ian!

The Best Movie at the 51st New York Film Festival: “Her” by Spike Jonze

My favorite film at the 51st New York Film Festival was “Her” directed by Spike Jonze.  It appears the festival saved the best for last as the film was screened throughout the day on October 12, 2013 – the final day of the NYFF.  I attended the press screening in the morning which was attended by the film’s director Spike Jonze.  Also joining him for a question and answer session were some of the stars of the film: Joaquin Phoneix, Amy Adams, Rooney Mara and Olivia Wilde.

“Her,” is set in the not so far off in the future Los Angeles and it focuses on the love life of Theodore Twombly (portrayed brilliantly by Joaquin Phoenix).  Theodore lives in a world of technology and he falls in love with an operating system (voiced by Scarlett Johansson).  As expected in a Spike Jonze film, there are funny, touching and very quirky moments.  For music lovers, the film was scored by the ultra-hip Arcade Fire, so you definitely will not want to miss this film.

As you watch this film, you will immediately be sucked into Theodore’s world and you will scarily not find it too far fetched that a person could fall in love with a virtual operating system.  I don’t want to spoil the film because I want you to see it when it gets released, but I can assure you, if you liked “Being John Malkovich,” you will also like “Her.”  Once the screening was over, I had a few nice photo ops and you can see those after the jump.   Thanks to everyone who was nice enough to take photos with me and also for your great performances!

An Encounter with Tony Danza

Hold me closer, Tony Danza!  Couldn’t resist the Elton John/Tiny Dancer lyric pun.  If you grew up in the 1980s like I did, Tony Danza and his show “Who’s The Boss?” practically helped raise you.  I recently met the actor and he was amenable to taking a photo with me, but he vetoed me taking a selfie.  Luckily for me, I tapped a complete stranger on the shoulder and they took the photo for me (and shockingly, it didn’t come out bad!)  Thanks to the stranger and special thanks to Tony Danza for being cool!
