On September 8, 2012, super-group Divine Fits played their first show in New York, selling out Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn. The band is comprised of Britt Daniel (of Spoon) on vocals and guitar, Dan Boeckner (of Wolf Parade and Handsome Furs) also on vocals and guitar, Sam Brown (of New Bomb Turks) on the drums and Alex Fischel on keyboards. Their music is a bit like ‘Spoon with synthesizers,’ which according to the crowd is a very good thing.
After every song, thunderous applause could be heard and it seemed to take the band a little by surprise. With a lineup like they have, it seems hard to imagine it could be any other way. Divine Fits played every song off their excellent debut album “A Thing Called Divine Fits,” and also played a cover of Tom Petty’s “You Got Lucky” as well as The Wipers’ “Doom Town.”
You could tell the band was having a great time as they would often face each other and jam out with extended guitar or keyboard solos. Britt Daniel mentioned that although the band had recently done some radio and TV, this was their first full gig in New York City, which Daniel correctly dubbed “the center of the universe.” If you missed the show last night, never fear – Divine Fits are coming back to play at Webster Hall in Manhattan on October 21, 2012. Don’t miss them!
You can see a pretty cruddy picture of the setlist after the jump, plus photos of my encounter with Divine Fits.
