X (on display at Lab Art in Los Angeles)
Street artist X (aka Thank You X) is everywhere. If you live in Los Angeles, surely you’ve spotted his work on the streets. If you haven’t seen it, you better tilt your head up because X is notorious for putting up art in those hard to reach places (see photos below). His art has been featured on Good Day LA and actress Demi Moore owns his work. Why X? X will tell you why!

According2g: When did you start doing street art?
X: I put my first poster on the street around 2002. I started off making posters with weird photos of my friends on them. I would paste them around Orange County. I stopped for a few years and got back into when I moved to LA in 2009.

A2G: How did you get the name X? Do you realize how hard it is to google?
X: I like how hard it is to google. Some people call me ‘X’ some call me ‘Thank You X’. To me X means a lot of things. I feel like it adds some mystery.

"Memento Mori" by Tat Ito. Now showing at Joshua Liner Gallery in New York through June 11, 2011.
New York! Head over to Joshua Liner Gallery for two really great exhibits! You can view “White Flag” by Cleon Patterson as you enter the gallery. Don’t surrender there! The next room of the gallery features “Memento Mori” by Japanese artist Tat Ito. “Memento Mori” is Tat Ito’s first solo exhibition in New York and it’s great. The paintings feature acrylic, goache and gold leaf on tondo and rectilinear canvases. At first glance, you enjoy seeing schools of fish, swimmers and/or dalmatians in these detailed and extremely colorful works. When you do a bit of further examination, you’ll see all sorts of pop art iconography and references in the paintings.

Closeup featuring Jeff Koons' Balloon Dog.
This perfect fusion of Eastern and Western culture is present in all of Tat Ito’s works. Seeing the painstaking detail of Ito’s paintings mixed with images of “factory art” is so clever as it maintains the integrity of ‘serious art’ with a twist of humor.

Closeup: Pissing on Warhol.
My friend and I attended the opening night reception and we enjoyed checking out each work and looking for pop art references. We were able to spot nods to Jeff Koons (Balloon Dog), Damien Hirst (Shark) and Andy Warhol (Soup Cans) and when we spoke to Tat Ito, he was kind enough to point out a Hirst reference (Diamond Skull) that we missed! Thanks Tat! You can see a photo of me with Tat Ito after the jump.
“Memento Mori” by Tat Ito is showing at the Joshua Liner Gallery(located at 548 West 28th Street, 3rd Floor) in New York through June 11, 2011. Don’t miss it! You can see more photos at The Worley Gig.

The Andy Monument by Rob Pruitt.
Artist Rob Pruitt is paying tribute to Andy Warhol at the former site of Warhol’s Factory in Manhattan. Entitled “The Andy Monument,” the sculpture will be on display until October 2, 2011 at the corner of 17th and Broadway in New York City. In case you were wondering, the former location for The Factory is now a Petco! Ugh!
