Two years ago, I fell in love with Seattle-based artist Michael Leavitt’s work.  In a show called “The Art Army Royalty” (See pictures here.  Link will open in new window), Leavitt’s sculptures of modern art world superstars perfectly captured the essence of each artist while transforming them into the style or work each artist is most famous for.  His latest exhibit “Empire Peaks” at Jonathan Levine Gallery finds Leavitt juxtaposing Star Wars characters with celebrities and historical figures.  Every single work in the exhibit is a stroke of genius.

As you can see, all of these works are brilliant.  You can enjoy them without being a Star Wars fan, but if you love Star Wars, you may find yourself squealing with delight as you peruse the exhibit.  What you cannot see from these photos is the extreme detail in each figure, so I urge you to see them in person.  You have until December 21, 2013, so do not delay!  The Jonathan Levine Gallery is located at 529 West 20th Street #9E in Manhattan.

Angelina Jolie

Happy birthday to actress Angelina Jolie!  The first time I ever saw “Gia,” I knew that she was going to be a big star.  At the time, I didn’t realize she’d become one of the hottest stars on the planet, but she works it so I say good for her!  I have a bunch of friends who’ve worked with Angelina on various movies and I’ve heard some pretty amusing stories.  Since I wasn’t there to witness them first hand, all I can say is …..  One time I did run into Angelina and Billy Bob Thornton at a grocery store in Los Angeles and I thought they were going to have sex right there in the aisle and I followed them around the store, just in case.  I’m only half kidding!

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt

At first glance, when you walk into the Stefan Stux Gallery in New York and see the exhibit Decompose / Recompose: Resurrect by Alex Guofeng Cao, you will view larger than life photos of some of the most recognizable icons in the world such as Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Madonna, Marilyn Monroe and Pamela Anderson, your first thought is “I know that picture.  Why is this in a gallery?”  Upon further examination, Chinese artist Alex Guofeng Cao‘s photo mosaics consist of hundreds of tiny images of similar photographs.  For example, the next two photos are closeups of the Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt pictures.

I loved this exhibit!  Decompose / Recompose: Resurrect is now showing at the Stefan Stux Gallery in Chelsea through May 29, 2010.

See a really famous image of Pamela Anderson and what comprises the photo after the jump.  Please note, the Pamela Anderson photo contains nudity, so if you are offended by boobies, don’t say I didn’t warn ya.

Madonna - Brainwashed!

Mr. Brainwash’s Icons exhibit in the meat packing district is so flippin’ cool, I feel that for those who cannot make it to New York, I need to share as many photos with you as possible.  And for all my New York readers, this exhibit runs until the end of March so if you don’t go, you only have yourselves to blame.

As the next picture suggests, there’s more this way…
