What could be better on August 14, 2009 than going to see two brilliant singers perform on the same bill? At Manhattan’s Highline Ballroom, Anya Marina and Emiliana Torrini wowed the audience with their vocals and their words.
Anya Marina recently had her single “Miss Halfway” featured on the TV Show Grey’s Anatomy, so it’s just a matter of time before she’s the next big thing. I enjoyed her lyrics very much and her vocals have a frosted girlie feel that lets you know that she is one chick not to mess with. Her stories between songs were great and she even designs her own T-shirts. A girl after my own heart.
Around the stroke of 10 PM, the main attraction, Emiliana Torrini hit the stage. If you don’t know her, the Icelandic singer was discovered in 1999 by Tears For Fears’ Roland Orzabal and he produced most tracks off her first album “Love In The Time Of Science.” Her voice is Bjork-ish but slightly more fragile and innocent. She performed tracks from that record as well as songs from her newest album “Me and Armini.” A few more fun facts about Emiliana Torrini: She sang “Gollum’s Song” which appears over the end credits to the second Lord of the Rings film and she also co-wrote Kylie Minogue’s massive hit “Slow.”
