Arcade Fire
This is turning out to be a great week for Arcade Fire. The Canadian indie rock band has made it into NME, Mojo, Q Magazine as well as According2g’s top 10 albums of the year list and now they’ve been nominated for Best Album at the Grammys. Congrats to them. Speaking of the Grammys I just finished reading the entire list of nominees and aside from Florence and the Machine (whose debut album was released in 2009) being nominated for the 2011 Best New Artist Grammy and LaRoux (whose album was also released in 2009) being nominated for best dance track in 2011 for a track off her 2009 album, the list of nominees is dull and very uninteresting. Most people watch the Grammys and bitch about how terrible they are. I will not be one of those people. I’ll be happy with spending 3 or 4 seconds the next day scanning the list of winners and saving myself 4 painful hours of torture. I recommend you do the same.

Top 12 Albums of 2010
I’m so happy that 2010 was a great year for music! Last year, I struggled to find 10 albums I liked enough and this year, I had to stop myself at my favorite 12. I was fortunate enough to meet 11 out of the 12 artists in 2010 (Arcade Fire being the exception) and I saw 11 out of the 12 albums performed live (with Kele being the exception) and I want to take this opportunity to thank all of the artists again for making my ears so happy in 2010. I’ve listened to all of these albums so many times this year and I love them all dearly.

Like my experience with Spoon, the more I have been listening to Arcade Fire recently, the more I am loving their music. Here’s a video of “Neighborhood 1 (Tunnels)” live from Madison Square Garden at their very first show there on August 4, 2010.

For those who read this site daily (and I thank you for your patronage), you know that I go to a lot of concerts. I try to see bands I’ve never had the chance to experience live whenever possible and nothing pleases me more than hearing a band’s music for the first time when they walk out on stage in front of my eyes. I hadn’t yet had a chance to hear Arcade Fire’s latest album “The Suburbs” which leaked weeks ago, but was officially released this week. What I have heard is that the buzz on this album is so good, it made me cancel my plans so I could go see this album performed live.
The night started off on a high as openers Owen Pallett and Spoon played awesome sets (more on both coming soon). Then at 10:20 pm, the sold out crowd at Madison Square Garden got to hear the New York live debut of tracks from “The Suburbs” by Arcade fire. Playing songs such as “Rococo,” “We Used To Wait,” “The Suburbs” and “The Suburbs (Continued),” it didn’t matter to the crowd that these tracks are brand new. The audience reacted to the opening notes as if these songs have been around for years and the vibe from the crowd was infectious. Many songs feature something catchy to sing along to, whether it’s a repeated chant, a section made for hand claps and finger snaps or the upbeat music from the baroque pop band. I had a great time and I snagged a copy of “The Suburbs” on my way out. These songs fit right in amongst fan favorites “Keep The Car Running,” “Intervention,” “Haiti,” “Neighborhood #2 (Laika)” and “Crown of Love.”
Lead singer Win Butler played piano, guitar and walked out into the audience several times. I wasn’t terribly impressed with their visuals, but perhaps when Terry Gilliam directs and broadcasts the show on the internet on August 5, it might have a more ethereal vibe to it. I also liked the fact that the band has been supporters of Haiti long before it was trendy and a portion of ticket sales went directly to help the victims of the recent earthquakes there. I am officially a fan of Arcade Fire, and I think I made the right decision by attending their show. A video of “Neighborhood 1 (Tunnels)” will be coming soon, so stay tuned.
