Ssion

Cody Critcheloe of Ssion

Ssion!  If you don’t know this dance/punk performance art collective and band from Kansas City, you’d better put them on your radar immediately…  but only if you enjoy seeing a band that will keep you dancing all night while you watch extremely trippy visuals on the screens behind them as they perform tracks that are both funky and rockin’.  Lead by Cody Critcheloe, Ssion (pronounced “shun”) played the first of 3 nights at the Museum of Modern Art PS1 in Queens.  Ssion is previewing new tracks from their upcoming album “Bent,” which will be released in July, 2011.  Cody Critcheloe is a little bit Freddie Mercury, a little bit Jake Shears and a whole lot of entertaining!  He danced all night long, and had drag queens and cross dressers dancing on stage with him to make the evening more wild.  Perhaps best of all, Casey Spooner of Fisherspooner was a special guest and he welcomed the Spring to New York by wearing slightly more than a smile (see a picture after the jump).

The crowd was dressed to the nines and the museum was packed.  One thing was clear – everyone was there for one reason only: to have a great time.  This show is definitely a contender for one of the best shows I’ve seen in 2011.  It combined art and music perfectly and was fun from start to finish.  If you missed this show, it is a pity, but you have two more chances to catch Ssion at PS1.  They’ll be performing on May 14 and 15, 2011 and you can get tickets in the link above.  The show begins around 9 pm and I highly recommend you see it.

See more pictures after the jump including Casey Spooner wearing very little and the gratuitous armpit hair shot  of Cody(for my gays), the set list and a photo from my backstage encounter with Cody Critcheloe.

Trevor Hall

On July 11, 2010, South Carolina’s Trevor Hall opened for reggae legend Jimmy Cliff at Summer Stage in New York’s Central Park.  I admit, I had never heard of Trevor Hall before this show and when I saw his gorgeous self take the stage, I was all ears!  He sites Bob Dylan, Bob Marley and Bjork as his musical influences and his music is infused with acoustic rock and reggae.  There were lots of stoned college kids around me that were huge fans and this one guy next to me took every opportunity to shout “Trevor Hall, you’re fire!”  It was pretty amusing.  Hall played several new songs and told the crowd that he has a new live CD that just came out called “Chasing The Flame – On The Road With Trevor Hall.”  Trevor’s lyrics were very positive and I liked the message he was sending to the crowd.  After looking on his official website, I learned that he did a lot of charitable work in India and now I think I like him even more.  He brought his dad, Jeff Hall, on stage to sing on one of the songs and it was a really cute father/son moment.  See more pictures of this gorgeously talented singer after the jump (including a gratuitous armpit hair shot for all my gays!).  And best wishes to you Trevor!
