Photos by G. All art by Lynda Benglis.
The New Museum in Manhattan has a very special exhibit that opens to the public today, February 9, 2011: the first ever career retrospective of artist Lynda Benglis shown in New York! Lynda Benglis has just about done it all and this must see exhibit has something for just about everyone: sculpture, video installations and photographs, many of which are on display for the first time. Benglis has been at the forefront of the women’s lib movement, conquering the world of art, which had previously been ruled by men. She broke down so many boundaries for women, including a huge victory when she responded to the male-dominated art world by posing completely naked (except for a pair of sunglasses) with a giant latex dildo as an advertisement for her 1974 exhibit. A photo of that can be seen after the jump, but please be warned it contains nudity.
You might recognize this poured wax sculpture as it is regularly on display at the Whitney Museum. There are many different variations of this sculpture in the retrospecitve and each one will leave you wondering how she made it. One of my favorite parts of the exhibit was a room lit with only black light featuring some very cool wall sculptures. The below picture will give you a frame of reference, but please take my word for it and see this with your own eyes!
Lynda Benglis at the New Museum runs from February 9, 2011 through June 19, 2011. The New Museum is located at 235 Bowery in New York.
After the jump, see two pictures that may not be safe for closed-minded people.
