The babe-a-licious electro pop Canadian trio Young Empires played a show stealing set at New York’s Bowery Ballroom on August 13, 2010.  Making this show even more special was the fact that this was the first show Young Empires played in New York.  From the opening note until the moment they walked off stage, the crowd, including myself, loved what we heard.  Their songs have a great beat and the vocals from singer Matthew Vlahovich are a bit like Trent Reznor meets Kele from Bloc Party.  According2g, that’s amazing!  If you click on the above link, you can download a free EP of demos by signing up on their mailing list.  I highly recommend it!  I met the band after their set and all three guys were beyond nice.  Lead singer Matthew Vlahovich even commented that my eyes are as pretty as the ocean.  Thanks Matthew!  I’m returning the love by telling the whole world to put Young Empires on their radar because this band is going to be huge!  Looking forward to hearing more great things to come from Young Empires.

Moments after Dragonette’s amazing set at the Bowery Ballroom in New York on August 13, 2010, I met the band.  Dan Kurtz, keyboardist for Dragonette came out first to look for a friend.  After a brief chat about the joys of the Panasonic Lumix camera, he invited me backstage to meet singer Martina Sorbara and drummer Joel Stoufer!  How amazing is that?!  And thanks again for the offer Dan, that was really nice of you! All three members were beyond nice and I am extremely grateful to them for being so cool.  Martina thought she came out looking too tan in the first photo we took together, so Dan Kurtz offered to take another with a different backdrop.  I assured Martina that she looked fabulous in both shots, and as you can see from the above photo, I was right!  Thanks again to Dragonette for being totally awesome, both on stage and off!

Matthew Vlahovich and Jake Palahuk of Young Empires.

It’s not very often when you don’t want to slash your wrists watching an opening band.  It’s even more rare when you fall in love with the opening act immediately.  It’s also uncommon when the band keeps you entertained throughout their set to the point where you don’t want them to ever stop playing.  Such was the case when I saw Canadian electro group Young Empires open for Dragonette at New York’s Bowery Ballroom on August 13, 2010.  This was the first show the group has ever played in New York and based on the crowd reaction, you’d think they’d been around for years!  The crowd was dancing and grooving throughout the band’s 30 minute set.  Lead singer Matthew Vlahovich’s voice reminded me a bit of Kele from Bloc Party mixed with Trent Reznor and when you put that on top of some hard hitting dance music, I was in heaven!  I think this band has the potential to be huge and I am already a huge fan!

I couldn’t wait to meet the band so I could tell them each how awesome they were and they were all extremely nice guys.  More on my encounter with them coming soon. Here’s a piece of wonderful news that lead singer Matthew Vlahovich told me – if you go to the band’s myspace page (link is above), by signing up on their email list, you can get 4 demos and 1 remix the band has done for free!  I’ve already downloaded and I am loving their studio work as much as their performance!  I wish them all the success in the world and I hope they make it quick so I can go see them live again.

"Please let me meet G after the show. Amen."

Shy Child

Prior to Dragonette hitting the stage at New York’s Bowery Ballroom on August 13, 2010, the electro-pop band Shy Child played a 35 minute set.  I liked their set a lot.  The band consists of just two members and they produced some sounds that got the crowd dancing and warmed up for Dragonette.  Their latest album “Liquid Love” is out now and if you go to their official website (link is above), you can download a free mp3 of their song “Criss Cross.”
