Sarah McIntosh of The Good Natured

Hot band alert!  The UK electropop band The Good Natured visited New York’s Mercury Lounge on January 15, 2012.  I’d never heard any of their music until they took the stage and I liked every song I heard tonight in their 8 song set.  Their music is upbeat and has a great groove.  Lead singer Sarah McIntosh’s voice reminded me of bits of Ladytron and LaRoux.  The audience was loving the show as well, especially when Sarah McIntosh performed in the crowd.  People were yelling out to hear The Good Natured’s single “Skeleton,” which was the final track of the night. You can download a free mp3 of another great track “Wolves” on The Good Natured’s website.  I am looking forward to hearing more great music from this group and Sarah told me that the album should be completed by the end of January.  Watch out for The Good Natured.  They are going to be big!

Archy Marshall of King Krule

On January 11, 2012, UK’s darkwave/reggae/dubstep band King Krule played a sold out show at Manhattan’s Mercury Lounge.  King Krule’s lead singer Archy Marshall is only 17 years old!  Wow!  Also known as Zoo Kid, Archy Marshall has been releasing albums since 2010.  In fact, he played the title track of his 2010 release “Out Getting Ribs” as an encore.  He also played many tracks off his recently released EP “True Panther” including “Bleak Bake,” “Portrait in Black and Blue” and “Lead Existence.”  The future is very bright for King Krule as they are blowing up in their native UK and have been offered a plum spot as an opening act on Girls’ 2012 US tour.   Best of luck to King Krule!

December 30, 2011 was an epic night.  New York based dance pop bands Class Actress and Penguin Prison got New York in a dancing mood as they performed a double bill of greatness at Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg.  2011 has seen the meteoric rise to fame for both groups and I am certain that 2012 will see even higher heights for Class Actress and Penguin Prison.

From the second Class Actress hit the stage, an all out dance party ensued as lead singer Elizabeth Harper’s sexy vocals over lush beats got the crowd ready to groove.  Performing songs from her excellent EP “Journal of Ardency” and her full length debut “Rapprocher,” the crowd went wild as we danced to songs like the ultra funky “Keep You,” “Limousine,” “Let Me Take You Out,” and “Careful What You Say.”

Penguin Prison

Penguin Prison

The crowd was ready to groove by the time Penguin Prison took the stage, and like the music of Class Actress, every song played is catchy and knows how to rev the audience up.  Lead singer Chris Glover jumps into the crowd, plays guitar behind his head and delivers the funk.  His set consisted of songs such as the infectious “In The Way,” “Desert Cold,” “Something I’m Not,” “Animal Animal,” “Don’t Fuck With My Money,” and he also performed his excellent remix of Lana Del Rey’s “Blue Jeans.”  2012 is going to be a huge year for Class Actress and Penguin Prison and for those that got to witness this great double bill, all we can say is thanks for a great night!

I’ve been really lucky to see both bands introduce their new material to receptive audiences and it’s so cool to see that in a few short months, the entire venue is singing along to the songs.  It’s only going to get bigger for Class Actress and Penguin Prison and I am so excited for their futures!

If you don’t know the music of Penguin Prison or Class Actress, I suggest you remedy that right now.  Your body, mind and soul will thank you for it!

Review: Atlas Sound live at Bowery Ballroom

Bradford Cox of Atlas Sound

Bradford Cox of Atlas Sound

On  December 18, 2011, Georgia’s Atlas Sound played a sold out show at Bowery Ballroom in Manhattan.  Atlas Sound is the brain-child of Bradford Cox and his nearly two hour set was definitely great for the brain.  If you don’t know the music of Atlas Sound, it’s a solo side project from the extremely creative and very talented Bradford Cox.  His music is ambient, psychedelic and extremely passionate.  When Cox writes songs, the lyrics and music are written via stream of consciousness and they are deemed finished when they “start to sound crowded.”  Atlas Sound took the stage around 10 PM and played for a solid hour and 45 minutes.  He emerged with just a guitar, a smoke machine and lights, which kept the crowd absolutely mezmorized for the entire set.

Every song was captivating to watch as the songs each built to a climax and Cox’ passionate delivery mixed with perfect mood lighting made for a surreal night.  Cox played a lot of songs from his critically acclaimed album “Parralax” and he also did a Christmas song called “Artificial Snow.”  I sat inches from artist and Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ guitarist Nick Zinner and he and his friends had commented that from the looks of things, I was set to have some pretty good pictures from the show – and as you can see above and below: YES!  Good news for Atlas Sound fans – NYC Taper was in the audience and he said that he’ll be uploading the concert this week.

“California Song” by Hedi Slimane. Now showing at MOCA in Los Angeles through January 22, 2012

Los Angeles!  Make sure you check out “California Song” by Hedi Slimane at MOCA.  The exhibit focuses on the period where Slimane spent in California, photographing architecture and rock stars.  Featured prominently in the exhibit is Christopher Owens from the band Girls, whose album “Father, Son, Holy Ghost” was one of my favorite albums of 2011.  On the ground floor are black and white photos laid out in a similar manner as you see above and on the top floor, Slimane’s photos are projected onto 3 sides of a cube that change every few seconds.  It looks really cool in person!

MOCA is located at 8687 Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood.  “California Song” by Hedi Slimane runs until January 22, 2011.  Don’t miss it!
