Bonnie Franklin

Sad news from all walks of life.  Actress Bonnie Franklin, who is best remembered for her role on the show “One Day At A Time” has died at age 69.  Bonnie was always very nice when I saw her in Los Angeles back when I lived there.  RIP Bonnie.  Earlier this week, former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop died and also he was very nice.

C. Everett Koop lived to be 96, so that just goes to show once again that health is indeed wealth! RIP Mr. Koop!  Finally, I just learned about the death of Baseball Hall of Famer Stan Musial, who passed away earlier in 2013, so I’d like to take this moment to remember a true hero of the game of baseball since now everyone seems to be a juicer who deserves to be forgotten.

I am so sad!  Baseball Hall of Famer Gary Carter died today following complications from a brain tumor.  I’ve met Gary Carter so many times and he was always a nice guy in my experiences.  Because he was in a position to help others, he decided during his playing career that he would only autograph baseball cards post-1985 (it could have been post 1984) for a $25 donation to leukemia research.  Though that decision cost me hundreds of dollars in the 1990s, I gladly paid it.  RIP Gary!

It’s hard to think of the Los Angeles Dodgers without hearing the voice of their announcer  Vin Scully!  He’s been reporting on hits,
runs and errors for over 50 years and he has one of the great voices in broadcasting.  It’s great that at 84 years of age, he is still going strong.
Happy birthday Vin and keep rockin’!

Tom Seaver

Back in my other life when I was obsessed with the game of baseball, I used to enjoy meeting today’s birthday boy, Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver.  He was not always nice to fans and in fact, I probably saw him not sign more times than he did, but if you were fortunate to have a good experience meeting him, the reward was a really cool autograph.  Happy birthday, Tom!

Also born today: actors Danny DeVito and Rock Hudson, Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels, singer Gordon Lightfoot, model Lauren Hutton and director Martin Scorsese.

Dwight Gooden

Dwight Gooden

Happy birthday to former major league pitcher Dwight Gooden.  Even though when you live in New York, you have to chose whether to love the Yankees and hate the Mets or vice versa, coming from California, I loved both teams.  Now I couldn’t care less.  When I was in love with baseball, it was exhilarating to see Dwight Gooden pitch. He was absolutely amazing.  He fell victim to drug and alcohol problems and it ruined his career. So sad.  I hope he has overcome those problems and is doing better now.
