Arias With A Twist Deluxe

Arias With A Twist Deluxe at Abron Arts Center in New York. Now playing through October 15, 2011.

New York!  If you missed the amazing show Arias With A Twist a few years ago, great news – the show is back for a limited one month run at Abron Arts Center in New York.  Joey Arias is sensational!  Before the night is over, the legendary performer sings songs from “Kashmir” by Led Zeppelin to “You’ve Changed” by Billie Holiday.  You’ll laugh and groove as the prodcuction finds Joey Arias lost in the magical world of Basil Twist’s puppet kingdom.  If you want to get a taste of what the downtown scene in New York is really like, this show is a must.  I’ve seen the show half a dozen times and I absolutely love it.  I hope you will too.  You’d better get your tickets quickly as nightly performances sell out fast.  You have less than a month to see this wonderful show, so get your tickets now!

Basil Twist and Joey Arias

One of my favorite performers, Joey Arias, is in pre-production for his latest show.  There’s one slight snag:  this is New York and this is an expensive place to be.  With the help of the King of Downtown, Earl Dax, they are trying to raise money to fund Joey’s next show – Z Chromosome: The Essence of Joey Arias.  They have 8 days to raise $7,500.  I think this goal can be reached if we all dig deep.  For those who don’t know Joey’s work – he is truly amazing.  His last show “Arias With A Twist,” was so great, I saw it 5 times.  It played to sold out shows in New York, Los Angeles, Paris and Berlin, and Z Chromosome is going to be entirely different!  The costumes will be done by fashion maven Thierry Mugler.  It’s going to be the show of the year, so please click here  and give whatever you can, no matter how small.  Let’s make this happen!

Basil Twist and Joey Arias on the red carpet at the premiere of "Arias With A Twist: The Docufantasty"

On April 23, 2010 puppeteer Basil Twist and drag legend Joey Arias attended the premiere of their film “Arias With A Twist: The Docufantasy,” as part of New York’s Tribeca Film Festival.  The film showcases the wonderful worlds of Basil Twist and Joey Arias and in the center of it all is footage from their hugely successful show Arias With A Twist, which had sold-out runs in Los Angeles, New York, Berlin and Paris in 2008-2009.  I saw the show 5 times when it was in New York and was truly one of the most innovative and original shows I’ve ever seen.  Coming from a person who goes out 3 to 5 times a week, that’s saying a lot!  In Arias with a Twist, Joey Arias sings renditions of songs by Led Zeppelin (Kashmir), The Beatles (Within You Without You and Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds) and Billie Holiday (You’ve Changed) and flawlessly, I might add, mingled with interactions with some of the most intricate puppetry that has ever graced the stage.  The Docufantasy also has footage of Basil Twist when he lived in France becoming one of the greatest puppet-masters in the world plus some of the other shows he has worked on (and they were all amazing!), clips of Joey Arias performing with Klaus Nomi and David Bowie (TVC15 for the Bowie die-hards reading this) and testimonials by legendary performers such as Raven O, Sherry Vine, Elvira, Ann Magnuson, artist Kenny Scharf and designer Thierry Mugler and many of them were in the audience tonight.  My favorite line in the movie was when Joey Arias was talking about his days in Las Vegas working on the Cirque DuSoleil show Zumanity. Arias won the prestigious award for “Diva of the Strip,” to which Joey replied, “That award should have gone to Celine Dion.  She’s a diva. I am a goddess.”  Truer words have never been spoken. This film has not been picked up by a distributor yet, so to all the movie moguls reading this blog – I’ve just presented you with a golden opportunity.  The world deserves to see this wonderful film!

Happy Birthday Basil Twist!

Posted by The G on June 28, 2009 under GNN | 2 Comments to Read

The incredibly talented puppeteer Basil Twist is celebrating his birthday today. We at According2G.com would like to wish him a fabulous birthday. Though he is most notibly recognized for “Symphonie Fantastique,” an under-water puppet show, I was first exposed to his genius in last years’ “Arias With A Twist,” starring famous drag star Joey Arias. The show was so great, I saw it 5 times! You can read more about Basil on his official website.
