Louise Bourgeois - The Fabric Works. Now showing at Cheim and Read in NYC through June 25, 2011

It’s hard to believe that May 2011 marks the one year anniversary of Parisian born artist Louise Bourgeois’ death (at age 98).  Her work is very much alive in an exhibit entitled “The Fabric Works,” which is now showing at Cheim and Reid in New York.  If you are unfamiliar with Bourgeois’ work, she was an amazing artist who literally did it all.  A career retrospective ran at the Guggenheim Museum in New York a couple of years ago and it showed that Louise Bourgeois conquered every discipline in art from her infamous spider sculptures to installation art to paintings.  Though her works are largely abstract, she is considered to be the first “confessional artist,” wherein her works express themes of betrayal, loneliness and anxiety.

I remember seeing the Guggenheim retrospective and being so impressed not only all the mediums Bourgeois worked in, but in the volume of work she produced.  “The Fabric Works” is also impressive as there are so many works of every pattern and color you can imagine on display.  The works were completed between 2002 and 2010.  Celebrate the life of Louise Bourgeois by seeing “The Fabric Works” at Cheim and Read in New York, located at 547 West 25th Street in New York.  “The Fabric Works” is on display until June 25, 2011.
