James Franco – New Film Stills

Love or hate James Franco, the one thing you can’t accuse him of is playing it safe.  James Franco is having a big month in New York in April 2014, as he is starring in a Broadway production of “Of Mice And Men,” (I saw it and it’s excellent, by the way) and at the Pace Gallery in Chelsea, he’s recreated an exhibit by Cindy Sherman (“Untitled Film Stills”) called “New Film Stills.”  Excuse the glare on these photos.  You gotta do the best you can when the sun is out on a lovely day and the art is encased in glass.

Recreating the exact poses Cindy Sherman did nearly 30 years ago, Franco is seen looking rather effeminate save for his facial hair, which makes this series of photos even better, according 2 G.

For those who think they’ve got James Franco all figured out, this exhibit will make them guess again and I really love that.  So many artists of all genres play it safe, and Franco for the sake of art (or perhaps even shock value) is not afraid to cross over the line, even if that finds him wearing a dress!  Go James!

New York!  You’re definitely going to need to pay a visit to the Pace Gallery to see new works by Chuck Close.   The exhibit features recent paintings, prints, and tapestries, many of his famous friends.

Lou Reed - Chuck Close

If you don’t know much about Chuck Close’s life, you should definitely investigate as his life and times are as interesting as his works of art.  To briefly summarize, a spinal artery collapse left him paralyzed and his style changed as a result.  His earlier works looking more like the above photo of Lou Reed and his more recent output is stylized like the below painting of Lou Reed’s wife and fellow musician, Laurie Anderson.  Oh, and did I mention that Chuck Close has face blindness?

The other night I attended the opening night gala reception for Marilyn Minter’s “Paintings from the 80s” exhibit at Team Gallery.  I was enjoying the show and hanging out with my friend Jason, when his keen sense of artist spotting pointed me in the direction of American photographer Cindy Sherman!  I am such a big fan of her work and though she often appears as the subject in her own works, I would have missed this great opportunity to meet her without Jason.  Thanks for that J!  And thanks to Cindy Sherman for being really down to earth when we chatted.
